It might be dirt? From the condition of the frets it needs a good cleaning!

as someone who uses razors on fretboards, i strongly disagree. i've scraped numerous ebony boards, and haven't seen that kind of a color change. that's not to say it couldn't happen, but i don't think that's what it is. from the pic, it looks like rust, and well....i've never seen wood rust out. can ya get a better pic?Last edited by sully; 04-05-2006, 10:34 PM.

Fretboard Picture What do you think?
I've just visited my optician. He has okay'ed my vision, nothing wrong there. I thought it was me.
Next, i'll send my monitor in for a check.
Before i do that, is your image possibly a wee bit blurry?
...a sharper photo would really help

Too hard to get one in focus that close, who knows, the thing still plays great. Just was curious. I will mention there is a spot on the 4th fret that looks like its worn through the stain and is the same color as the wood around the frets. Maybe you can see this a little better. Just dont know how wood right up against the fretwire would be worn? Who knows. Thanks everyone!!

A wild guess: your frets are glued in (?). Glue has been spilled on the fretboard (before or after it has been dyed) and has been wiped off. The spots from the glue are now showing. Re-dyeing won't help because there's glue left in the grains.
As i said, a wild guess based on the very blurry evidence you have provided, my dear Watson.

I hear ya man, I have a pretty good camera just hard to focus on something that close. Its lighter colored wood, the ebony has definitly been stained and its just faded or worn away. I think we can kill this one, like I said I was just looking for everyones opinions/ideas....and congrats on your eye exam and good luck at the proctologist

You probably have a "macro" function on that camera. That'll fix your blurry problem.

Many people say that leather dye works almost as well as the ebony dye from stew... and costs a lot less... You should be able to pick some up at a grocery store or wally world in the shoe care section.
I wouldn't care to guess what caused it though- it's definetly "odd"...
