Most people/companies that make guitars use calipers to measure everything. As a hasty generalization, all of those bodies are 1 3/4 thick....except that heavy beast of a LP... but, fractions are too large of a measurement to construct a guitar. Ever see a mini ruler that had 64ths on it? Them ticks are really small.... but calipers get you to 1/1000 of an inch in a way that is very easy to read. within 10/1000's (1/100 of an inch) is damn well close enough for anything guitar related though. and good luck reading 1/100 on a ruler....

Plus, the finish can have an overall affect on size. It's virtually impossible to get a consistant thickness from guitar to guitar, but most manufactuer's get it pretty darn close.
