  • On to the next project... Which neck for my Rhoads?

Might be wondering whats with all the projects and polls lately... its simple. Ive got WAY too many parts laying around, and I need to build some guitars to get them out of the way!

On to the project... the guitar is origonally an RR3R. Put in an EMG 81/85 years ago, but they went into the new Dinky, so this will have a Duncan Dime/'59 combo!

Now Im unsure what neck I want to use. First I have a DXMG project neck. The neck is in nice condition, but the headstock paint had some nice chunks out of it. So I removed the binding, and stripped it down to bare maple. IF I use this neck for the guitar, I will be laminating the headstock with a thin piece of Flame Maple, and will ATTEMPT to paint it to match the body. Only thing Im not crazy about is the plastic inlays.

Second is a MINT DKMG neck reverse head.. Although I used ebony color in the generator, this neck actually has one of the nicest pieces of rosewood Ive seen... some nice off color striping and a cool little knot around the upper frets.

So, cast your vote, let me know what you think!

And the two necks in question:

DXMG neck with (hopefully) matching headstock.
    74.47%
    35
    DKMG neck.

Agreed, you need a Dxmg neck! But I haven't seen any dxmg neck with a matching headstock up to now

I like the mini fins! Something different.

          Fins, without a doubt.

I think the fins look better than the pirhana. I imagine you will have a problem as the RR3 has a 22 fret neck, & the DKMG & DXMG are both 24 frets.

The fret issue will be taken care of... the finished product will look exactly (or close enough) to the above image.

I voted piranhas, based on the generator pics I like that better.

I do think that sharkfins are mandatory with a regular pointy headstock, but with a reverse head the piranhas are very cool.
And both necks have plastic inlays, but you don't notice it that much with the piranha inlays ( I have a DKMGT myself).

BTW my DKMGT fretboard is as perfect as it gets... very dark and totally even in color, no knots or imperfections. I've yet to find another import Jackson with such a fretboard!

Actually, the DKMG neck I put on my g/f's Kelly is like that. Almost ebony dark, NO figuring, standard headstock. Heres a pic of it...

Well I kicked off the project tonight, spur of the moment kinda thing. Lets just say that the DXMG neck is now 22 fret Rhoads compatible!

Pics and tech article to come soon.

Even though I chose the neck Im using, Id still like to know everyones opinion, so please keep voting.

Cool! I voted for the DXMG neck, gotta have those sharks!
So you cut the neck down? Are you re-doing the binding on the end of the fretboard?
