  • Is this a 650XL?

I scored a Charvel on eBay and just finished bringing her back to life but I am still unsure of the model. Someone on eBay said it was a 650xl. It has a JE-1200 (1H2SC) active system in it with 5way switch, volume, tone, and boost knob.

This guitar was in bad shape! The electronics were wired wrong and not working (because of wiring). 2 of the knobs were shot. The fretboard was lifting away from the neck, by the nut, and the nut was shimmed (because of the fretboard problem). All the problems are fixed. Not sure what it's worth but I paid $344. Also, I had to replace the tremolo with an OFR that was on a V I just built so that adds to the cost i guess but it was worth it. She is amazing!

Anyway, let me know what you guys think this model is and if I paid too much for it. Thanks Pics below

yep 650xl. I was bidding on that guitar too. anything under $400 is a great deal on these guitars. sucks that you had to replace the trem. good to mint are going for 450-650 on ebay. Picked up one myself today for 399 (Model 6) on ebay and it needs some TLC.

Cool so I didnt pay too much for it. That's good to know.

Thanks everyone for the info and nice words

The tremolo that came on it is still good but it has dust all in it. when I unlocked all the strings I couldn't even get them out because the little metal blocks were stuck. I had to get a small flathead and pry the blocks loose! so it's good but needs some major cleaning.

It's an '86 (as it has a Kahler). The 650XL was called a Model 6 back then.

                  History lesson:

That guitar was the "Model 6" from '86-'88, with the '86s having Kahler trems and the '87-88s having Jackson JT-6 trems.

In '89, it became the 650xl with the "toothpaste" logo and the Schaller-made JT-590 trem. It was unchanged in '90-91, but the catalog lists it as the "650 Custom." It was converted into the Jackson Soloist XL after '91, with specs more like the current Soloists of the time.

Thanks profusion for clearing that up. Sanctuary's post was a bit confusing!

The old Model 6's and 650 Xl's are among my favorite guitars of all time. I think they sound as good as or better than the USA Solists of the same period. I guess I must prefer the sound of rosewood fingerboards (the USA's had ebony) on this syle guitar. The combination of 3 pups and the active mid-boost circuit really makes for a great deal of tonal variation that can cover any style. BTW, you are probably better off with the OFR. The old JT-6's sound great and stay in tune just fine, but the saddle screws are prone to strip if you are not very carful with them. This has already happened to me twice on my 1990 USA Fusion. I think you've made an excellent guitar even better! Great Score!
