I worked at a music store in the mid 80's to late 80's. The crackle guitars were amazing the first time you saw them. They ended up being like disco in that it was a brutal downfall when they (quickly) fell out of favor. The graphics definitely make many C/J's look dated.

I view the Soloist as one of the best designs of the 80's along with the PRS Custom. Aside from being a great design they are great playing versatile guitars with probably the most widespread appeal of any Jackson. I think that the early Floyd equipped Shannon-spec. models will eventually be some most sought after guitars of the 80's.

Whatever. I will say this. Charvel's crackles are way better than any of the other manufacturers. Some of the BCRs are fucking ghastly...

Back in '94 when I was trying to get auditions for bands, all the guitarist wanted ads used to state 'No pointy guitars'. After months of frustration just trying to make it past the first audition, I eventually borrowed a Fender Strat with a Hotrails in the bridge, and a Peavey Stereo Chorus 2x12. I was hired by the first band that I showed up to with this equipment. After a couple of rehearsals with this gear, I decided to show up with a Model 6 and a Marshall SLX half stack...I was reading the want ads again the next day.

I ordered my first USA Jackson Soloist direct from Ontario in 2001. When I went through the specs with my favourite guitar shop (Micro Music, Liverpool), they were really surprised that I wanted to spend so much money on what they thought was such a dated guitar.

I've played plenty of guitars that feel just as good as my Soloist, but none that were built or finished to such a high standard. The whole look of them, in my opinion, is both brutal and elegant. My snow white Soloist reminds me of a swan (a violent swan), and I like swans.

What was the purpose of that? Is that the short phrase for "No spandex suits and pink/green guitars and tapping-licks-all-the-time"? Well, I could somewhat understand that.
But seriously, maybe I dont get it because Im from Europe, what was the exact purpose of that statement?

Around '94 the anti-metal/shred/guitar hero thing was in full swing. You wouldn't be taken seriously unless you played some crappy "vintage" thing (like a sad melody maker that couldn't stay in tune) with farty sounding distortion. Playing with any kind of skill was especially frowned upon.

Yeah, I don't think the grunge wave hit quite as hard over here, so it's rather hard to comprehend. We turned from the hair metal bands, yes, but I think most went to heavier forms of metal instead. Melodic death and black metal quickly became big here.

I remember when Judas Priest released Painkiller in '91. It set a new standard for heavy metal, and both the hair bands and the grunge bands just sounded like pop music after that.

Just look around at a lot of the guitars in the stores. Tons of things with Dinky-inspired bodies. I think the Soloist/Dinky are already classics in their own way. Fact is, Jacksons have survived quite well as 'metal' guitars, and I don't see any signs of that decreasing. Forget about all that crap 10 years ago. I see young kids shredding on Jacksons all the time at Guitar Center nowadays.
