I was reading an issue of Total Guitar (really big guitar magazine here in the UK), and a while ago (maybe a year and a half) they did a review of a Dinky. Now, whilst the majority of the review was very promising, the only thing they listed as a down-side was............ THE POINTY HEADSTOCK!!! They said they felt it was looking a little dated! [...]

In my opinion , I think you guys have nailed where Jackson is at the moment, It seemed that EVERY metal band worth it's salt had Jackson guitars , from Wasp to Metallica, then Ibanez started to dominate in the early 90's, and grunge was the nail in the pointy coffin. There is no way 80's jacksons will not be held in the same esteem as strats and LP's within the next 10-20 years, they were very much a part of the popular culture of the time.
Just be glad you weren't sitting with your 80's BC Rich collection!!!

Without a doubt, the Soloist/Dinky is a classic shape. Largely because it is based on a Strat. But how 'Classic' it looks may have more to do with the way it is finished. A blacked out DK1 with EMGs looks Metal. Compare it to an ArchTop Soloist with quilted maple and a matching headstock, and you have to say that brand new, it is a classic right off the shelf. Then look at some of the graphic guitars, and they can go from California Surf to Death Metal with just a paint job.

How is this for up to date. I just say a Jackson Kelly JS is a Ritz camera commercial last night being held by a supermodel in a fake photoshoot. They didn't show the headstock but it was a Jackson.
Some of the old finishes are dated, but I think all of the current body styles have stood the test of time. Everything is style comes back around again anyway. Right? Look at the new Kramers. If Jacksons are so dated why can't the custom shop keep up with orders and the new dinkys are flying out the door. I think Jacksons are becoming - "Retro".
