• Tuning nightmares explained

These articles ran in TapeOp magazine a few months back. They go a LONG way towards explaining why the guitar tuning system sucks and how to make it suck less. I think it's good enough to warrant being posted here and not in the tech section. It was written by producer Jack Endino.

wow, thanks bm! I cut a lot of stuff out of there, and pasted it into my notes section. I knew a lot of that stuff of course but the whole thing where harder picking would make your notes go sharp was a good read. I normally just tune until the needle doesn't move AT ALL. If it shoots over, i'll go flat, and retune up.

Very good info though! Good job! (rootbeer)

Re: Tuning nightmares explained

All stuff I've known for years, but no way could I have explained it as well.

THIS is why I set intonation the way I do.
THIS is why I don't use light strings.
THIS is why when down tuning you need to use REAL heavy strings.
THIS is why I set intonation on my guitars standing up.

And on and on...

Very interesting article... a lot of that I already know... one thing boggles me...

He never quite described exactly how HE likes to tune a guitar.

Good brush up on things. Always good to hear that others have the same problem as you.

Funny thing is that he mention the Buzz Feiten system (most likely) saying it is a "fudge" but it compensates somewhat for sharp notes in the first fret. I read his comment as "it's of no use". Then he goes on but never comes up with any solution to this problem. To me, a compensation is better than nothing...

Very good read. Fortunately I don't have ears as keen so little tuning foibles don't bother me as much but I am pretty intense about my own.

Bloody awesome link, most of the stuff he said, has happened to me, and my rhoads, especially the issue where the notes are sharp when you strike them at first, but settle down to proper tuning, and the crazy tuner thing, now i know how to do it properly to save time. Cheers B.M
