  • Jackson charvel history

I been reading the boards surfn the net and have a few questions So did wayne charvel and Grover ever make guitars together? Did and do they get along? What are the differences between the Jacksons and charvels if the same people made them? Also who makes the fake ones and puts old plates on them" lots of hints around but I am clueless" Are some of you guys old employees of Charvel and or Jackson? Thanks

Yes please someone educate us. I too was curious about this. From what I understand (please correct me):

    1. Wayne put guitars together (Charvels) from different sources which is a whole other story about Warmoth and boogie bodies?
    2. Grover also worked with Wayne.
    3. Grover created the first Jackson guitar (did wayne help any on the concord?) and because Wayne didn't want to endorse Randy’s guitar with the Charvel logo, Grover hand signed it (Jackson).

Jackson eventually started producing his own guitars. Charvel was owned by Jackson? (if so why did Charvel not own it anymore?) . Sold to FMIC

Also, Wayne, in his videos, seems bitter like he lost his original company/name. He says in his videos that he isn’t interested in “mass producing guitars” and can only make about “a guitar a week” as if he has a grudge against the industry.

all great questions and many that I also would like to know the answers. Sadly my site (www.usacharvels.com) is mostly about the guitars and not the people so there is not much info on Wayne or Grover.

You might try Hoss's site http://www.jacksoncharvelworld.net/Home.html
www.usacharvels.com - info, pics and Charvel guitar discussion board. All things Charvel
My Charvel guitars - always one away from too many!

Long story short: Wayne sold other peoples parts period. Grover Jackson built the company and produced the 1st guitars with the Charvel name. Wayne Charvel is still today trying to live off Grover Jackson's legacy and is still trying to take credit for Grover Jackson's work.

So what would you say is the difference between a early 80s Jackson or Charvel it seems Grover built them both side by side?

                Very simple, until 1986 Jackson = neck-thru, Charvel = Bolt-on.

Wayne gets such a bad rap(NO CREDIT) cause he left in late 78. Lets remember Wayne was working on guitars in the 50's and also was a cabinet maker by trade. by the 70's and word of mouth he was able to do it as a profession opening Azuza shop in early 70's. He did help highschool friend Linn Ellsworth start Boogie Bodies in which he hired Jim warmoth(later to branch off and form Warmoth) So he did use them as a supplier for the fender authorized repair and replacement work. Which led to Idea of building his own line of guitars and his affilation with David Schecter and IMC who eventially came close to sueing Wayne for 40k and him losing his home(and the reason he actually has to sell the co.). Grover had been there for about a year 77(some time) and knew wayne from being his rep for Anvil guitar cases, they became familiar and started working together Wayne taught him the ropes ( Grover never is a hands on guy more of a taskmaster directing Mike Eldred and crew) Where as wayne was,Grover in the end did not get along with wayne and tried to rid the shop of anyone who knew Wayne. This is why EVH left charvel, for he and Mike Anthony were close with wayne especially since Brad Bensel who was waynes first employee who went to H.S. with Mike Anthony. In closing anyone who doubts wayne can build a guitar go to his site www.wayneguitars.com and watch him cut and build entire guitar on the old pin router. And remember Wayne is responsible for the only true Charvel shape the STAR, built and named for EVH. Forgot Joanne Jackson was just as much responsible for Jackson being sucessful, by talking to people and actually saving deals that Grover had lost. Lets say she did alot of PR work.

So Wayne Charvel can't even use a pointy Charvel headstock? This is the like the confusing situation of Bill Lawrence.

A little history I dug up over the years

Wayne Charvel starts his Repair and parts Shop.

Wayne Charvel and Dave Schecter start making bodies and necks.

Dave Schecter makes templates and tooling for Charvel.

                      Charvel shows Lynn the business

                      Lynn teams up with Warmoth

EVH buys parts built by Charvel mfg. and assembles them

Grover Jackson is hired by Wayne Charvel.

VHI is out with the Charvel on the cover with credit

Grover and Wayne build paint, assemble the VHII.

                      The Jackson's buy Charvel mfg.,

                      Charvel mfg is taking shape.

JoAnn Jackson delivers the VHII guitar to EVH.

NAMM 1979 The EVH Charvel model is introduced.

EVH Model is avalable in Music Emporium Catalog.

Second record is out with the VHII in several photos.

VHII guitar is taken on tour recieves 2nd pro used Floyd Rose.

SDC Flurishes by 1981 and the first Charvel Catalog is issued.

EVH without any guitar endorsement possibly gets a few more Charvels and/or parts derived from the Charvel for the 1981 tour and endorsement. Charvel mfg. still wants EVH on board guitars are ordered as late as 1982.

Many pros turn to Charvel mfg. for custom guitars later to be bought out by Kramer, ESP and Inanez endorsements.

The Charvel Frankenstrat is still today in use.

EVH's Charvel VHII is buried as a gigantic show of good heart.

Charvel/Jackson guitars continue with excellent guitars and high profile clients to the present day.
