The initial reaction to that may be, "WTF, that's ridiculous! Why would someone do such a thing!". My response would be: Why the fuck do people do anything? There's some damaged people out there. Best not to give them too much information.
So, better safe than sorry. There is no reason, or at least no worthwhile reason, for people to know a serial number chapter & verse. It doesn't help in 99% of cases to share it, and since it could hurt, why do it? No upside.
