i know J/C cant do gibby shapes. how does hamer & dean get away with making them? especially since i think they are more comparable, same kinda of construction & woods. you cant confuse a jackson for a gibson but a hamer.....maybe.

I've heard part of it is a 'gentleman's agreement' between FMIC and Gibson which states that they won't copy each other's body styles (possibly due to abject failure and money wasted in each camp!)...Popular is not the same as good

Licensing fee?? Not sure. I know that Gibson sued PRS for the single cut design that PRS had for awhile. I think Gibson might have even won that lawsuit.Comment

Gibson won the initial suit and then PRS won it on appeal.
The body shape can be made by anyone.
It's only the combination of the body shape AND headstock design that cannot be produced by anyone other than Gibson.-RickComment

I think being overseas has something to do with most of them too. From what I understand, companies based outside the USA can easily copy designs without harassment from Gibson, FMIC, etc. I don't think the same laws apply.- AdamComment
