  • black vs metallic black

    Hi all,

Does anyone know if there is much difference between plain black and metallic black? I mean are the metal flakes quite large or are they quite fine.. like a pearlescent sort of effect? I can't see much difference between the two in photos.

Gloss black is drastically different in person than metallic black. Matte/Satin Black is closer in appearance to metallic black, since the flakes are so fine that they don't allow the glossy coat to shine as much, yet aren't large enough to reflect it themselves like black sparkle.

Metallic black always looks sort of grey to me.

Heres a pic of my metallic black Soloist...

Smaller flakes. But with the flash, you can see the colors reflected. It doesn't normally look that way. If your looking at it from a bit of a distance, it looks black. You have to get it under the lights to see that its metallic...

IMO, it vaires a lot. Some metallic blacks, like the import Rhoads I had, was so dark it just looked like black until you came close enough. The metallic black I've seen on a USA-made guitar (RR-1), looked more like dark metallic grey.

Thanks for all the replies and photos.

I am planning on getting a KV2 and was wondering which colour was best to emphasise the body bevels. The Jackson V-shape is the best of all the Vs ! IMHO of course.

As I get older I find the V shape becoming less comfortable for some reason - I think it's the edge of the body being so close to the bridge, as it changes how I anchor my arm to the body and the angle I get on the bridge.

I'm turing into an Old Strat Fart!

Hmm.. are you playing a different style of music now? Perhaps this discomfort could be the result of a different style of picking?

Yes, I am still trying to decide. That's the problem with Jackson guitars. You don't see too many US models in the guitar stores and so it's hard to see what the colours actually look like in real life, although the photos and descriptions are very useful.

The Y2KV is a killer shape too! Pity it's been discontinued.
