MOTO is in fact 'mother of toilet seat' because in the late 60's or early 70's it was a very popular new "fashionable" plastic. They made bathroom counter tops and matching toilet seats with it. No joke. Seen it.

The easy way to tell which is completely foolproof... Look closely at them with a bright light. Change the angle you view the piece. Real shell (mop) will have color reflected in the shell. You will typically see yellow, pink, red, purple or green. Not every peice may show color, but at least 7-8 out of 10 probably will. Any of the fake mop that is made of plastic wont show color.
