I am looking at a used DKMG with three knobs, I assume it is the 20db boost. I notice the newer ones do not have it...how come? is it because the older ones had EMG-HZ passive pickups and the new ones have EMG81 & 85 active pickups?

DKMGT with 20db boost?

I'm guessing they dropped the booster when they upgraded the pickups to actives. That would explain the newer ones having only two knobs.
If it was me, I'd get the used guitar, and just replace the passive EMGs with some Duncans or DiMarzios, and keep the gainbooster.
