  • Newbie. Hi all! Sustainer question.

Hi there, just a short intro for meself. I'm 30, live near Glasgow, Scotland and have a black RR3 with DiMarzio FRED and PAF Joe pups, an Epiphone Black Beauty, some strat type thing which came from a pawnshop and an Epi SG. I just ordered a natural finish Jackson SL3 too.
I'm into rock/metal/death metal like Fairport Convention, Jethro Tull, Def Leppard, Maiden, Deicide, Vader, AC/DC, Motorhead, Nile etc etc etc. ANything with nice guitars in it.

Anyhoo, I wanted a PC1 but those things cost a lot, so I ordered the SL3 instead. My question is this - has anyone tried to fit a Sustainiac to the neck position in an SL3 or similar guitar? I really like the way Phil Collen uses his to add colour to his leads, but I'm not wanting to pay someone a fortune to fit one if it's going to be a big job. The local guitar shop say they could do it for between £60 and £200, plus Sustainiac which will be around £100 so it could cost me £300! I could buy a DK2S for not much more!

    Any advice appreciated!

BTW I'm not so keen on the RR3 - the Epi Black Beauty is the best guitar I've ever played. Maybe the SL3 will beat it.....

It will work. However, the 18Volt Floyd/Jackson sustainer supplied in the PC1 is much more powerful than the Sustainiac or the Fernandez for that matter. If however you are on a budget and seems so, the Sustainiac is the way to go.

By the way, and I couldn't tell you were into Jethro Tull from your forum name!

Thanks mate, yep Martin Barre is a very under-rated player. His "Minstrel In The Gallery" intro is awesome.

The Jackson sustainer that comes with the PC1 - where can one of those be had? I've searched the net and nothing comes up. I assume they're a lot more expensive than the Sustainiac?
Would there be much (any) routing involved in fitting a Sustainiac to the SL3? The shop will charge me depending on how much work they need to do, so no routing = less cash for me to shell out!

The Jackson sustainer can not be had aftermarket. I'm not an authority on this, but I do know they are USA factory installed as I own two PC1's. Perhaps a dealer can chime in on this if the guitar is sent to Jackson for an install, or if this is even possible. One of the drawbacks to the Jackson sustainer is that they are factory serviceable only. I would think the cost would be prohibitive to have one installed in another production guitar such as the PC3 or others.

it would be less expensive, just to go out and get a slightly used PC1 instead of attempting to install the Jackson sustainer in another guitar. Just my .02 cents.

I have the other sustainers and they work OK, but nothing ground shaking as the PC1 sustainer.

If your budget isn't big, just get a DK2S:

The sustainer Jackson uses in the PC1 is an OEM part made by Floyd Rose exclusively for Jackson.
They will not sell it by itself. Last time I saw a price sheet, it was a $600 add-on to any Custom Shop build.
The Sustainiac unit was the original sustainer spec'd for the PC1, but once Phil heard a Floyd Rose unit, the Sustainiac was dropped.

I prefer the Fernandez FSK-401 over the Sustainiac unit myself.
            Easier to install.

Oh, another item. If installing any of these sustainers into a guitar not orginally equipped with one, is the consideration for the circuit board location. So, be looking at that. I've had several guitars in which I had to rout the body for a special compartment for the board and another for the battery box. This all depends on the type of guitar and how much room you have in the existing routs.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think you've talked me out of it. It would probably not be worth the cash or hassle to install a sustainer. Maybe I'll get a DK2S one day.

                Or a PC1....
