  • Anyone try a '59 Bridge in a Jackson Soloist

I have a Jackson Soloist SL2HT and I really like the sound of the neck pickup for rythm much better than the JB in the bridge so I think I will replace the JB for a 59 Bridge. I saw on duncan website that they work better with mahogany body and my jackson has maple neck thru. Does it fit? I play mostly hard rock metal with a Peavey 6505+ and Mesa Boogie 4x12 Recto Cab.

Why dont you like the JB? You're obviously a metal fan, and I'd have thought the JB would be ideal for you. It's certainly the best pickup I've ever used for metal or rock.

What kind of tone are you looking for? What DONT you like about the JB that makes you want something else?

lose bottom end and the fuzzy mid. I would like a bit less output and tighter bass. Maybe a Duncan Custom would fit?

A Custom would be a great choice, but I don't think it has less output than the JB. A 59 would probably work, considering your amp has gain to burn. I'd go with the Custom, but it's my favorite all-around pickup so I'm pretty biased.

You may want to consider a Duncan Blues Saraceno. I have one in one of my Soloists and LOVE it! VERY underated and unappreciated pickup, in my opinion...

I have a `59 in an `83 Charvel. My take is a JB is slightly smoother, whereas the 59 is a little more raw or harsh sounding in maple neck guitars. Can't say if it has a tighter bottom end, but if you're into a high gain I don't know if it's what you're looking for. It seems to sound great with modest gain - think early AC/DC rhythm sound which is actually quite clean. BTW, I love it in the Charvel as it works perfect in a HSS setup.

If you're really looking for a tight bottom and mids at high gain, I'd highly recommend the Dimarzio Breed neck pickup in the bridge position. Dimarizio commonly recommends this and I find it hits a sweet spot in smooth with nice harmonics at high gain settings, but yet still very clear notes.
