But when was "Crossroads" released? I thought it was in 1986, and they sure did have Jackson bolt ons then, the only Jackson bolt on San Dimas guitars...

I'll agree with metalcop that the guitar in the video is in fact a charvel ...

guys i don't think that this guitar was a charvel as it seems. I don't believe that a great guitarist such as Steve could damaged to death a good guitar such charvel. Propably the guitar in the moovie is a charvel copy and nothing more. That's my opinion.

Why would a cheap Charvel copy have a genuine Charvel neckplate and a covered up Charvel logo?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Are you kidding? SRV used to use his No 1 Strat (which was a late '50s early 60's) parts guitar as a pogo stick. Vai used to trow his guitars around all the time. A Charvel is just a production guitar, one that he could get anytime, anywhere.

Re: Steve Vai\'s Charvel in Crossroads......

The movie was indeed released in 86. The March 88 issue of Guitar Player Magazine has the statement about the red guitar being a Jackson and the name being coverd with tape to avoid issues with Micheal Jacksons lawyers. As I recall, the text was written about the scene and not so much a direct quote.

The movie was released in 86, therfore it was probably shot a year before that. Or about the same time as the very last few Charvels were made bearing a Charvel plate and a Jackson logo. Which would explain why it does indeed sport a Charvel plate.

I believe that would answer all questions.

March 14, 1986. As Chuckracer said, that means it was most likely filmed in '85.

Chuck - Please post a scan of that article, if you have it. This would put this long and tired argument to rest, finally.

                          I got this from Vai.com

S - "For Crossroads I was using a Carvin X-100B amp along with a Charvel guitar
that turned into my Green meanie guitar. I was using an MXR distortion, Cry
Baby Wha Wha and a Roland SDE 3000 for delay."

Steve designed and began using the Jem in 1987.

                          Hopefully this helps

Keep in mind too that many Jacksons were referred to as "Charvels" in the beginning. Even Randy Rhoads referred to his V's as Charvel customs.
