That's why I can't decide what to do! It feels kinda nasty to lay a new paint on it, but black is black, and quite simple to "repaint"
Believe it or not, black is actually a real hard one to repaint - it shows every flaw possible if the prep work isn't perfect, and getting scratches/swirl marks out in the final buffing is a real bitch as well...
I'd leave it the way that it is. It looks great, and this way you can jam and gig it and not worry about the stupid bass player ramming his bass into it, or the drummer dropping part of the drum kit on top of it (it has happened to me)..
I like the look of your yellow checker mockup, but I really wouldn't repaint that one if I were you. Jackson Firebirds are pretty damn rare and it would be a shame to 'modify' one.
However, it's your guitar and of course therefore it's your perogative to do what you want with it!
Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable
Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get
The world has too many black guitars - paint it whatever you want or leave it if you're lame. Either way just make sure you play it instead of letting it rot as an 'investment' piece.

Nice guitar..
And I thougt that you should encourage me!
It seems that the majority is for keeping it original.
Well - I'll keep my photoshop work for later.
...and I don't intend to sell the guitar. I have NEVER played a better piece. It weigh about a ton, but the tone is amazing!
If folks are paying for relic guitars or doing ham-handed jobs transforming minty guitars into relics, original paint can't be beat.
That Firebird is so fine, it would be a shame to mess with it. If you like the tone, that's an even bigger reason NOT to refinish. Putting too much paint on a guitar affects that.
Fast forward many years into the future, when you're an old man - maybe you'll want to sell the thing to help finance something important.
+1, again.
Even if you don't sell, you'll feel better knowing it went "unmolested".
It shouldn't hold you back from playing it.
If you feel the need to customize, then get fett-priced guitars.
