My redesign project

Hi all,

I currently have an Amber Sunburst Jackson DK2 which I am thinking of redesigning when I make a few repairs to it. I want to strip off the current paintwork and then repaint with a clear lacquer to show off the flame maple, add a custom black pickguard with no spaces for the 2 single coils as I never use them and replace the standard pup with a Seymour Duncan Distortion Trembucker which I want to add a coil tapping pot to. Will also fit a Floyd Rose Trem Stop as well. I've got a mock up that I've done on Photoshop just to see what it would look like but can't seem to add attachments at the moment. Any suggestions or advice (positive or negative) are greatly appreciated as I'm sure there is a huge amount of knowledege on these boards that could help me in my project

sounds cool. the pickguard will have to be custom-made. you will have to make one out of cardboard or something so a company can use it as a template...

The mock-up looks great.
Just be careful stripping the finish off of that top. It isn't very thick.
Think "sheet of construction paper". That's how thick it is.
Love the pick guard design... looks like it will help hide the over sized JT-580 route.

Yeh, I spoke to a guy who tried to do the same and said that he used paint stripper and the veneer lifted and never went back the same, so am going to go the (very gentle) sanding route and take my time with it so as not to damage the veneer. Should hopefully turn out ok!!!

Try to see how much finish you can get off of it with a cabinet scraper. CAREFULLY.

If you want to show off the maple top, why put a pickguard over most of it?

Probably to hide the two single coil holes.

Thanks for your input guys, really appreciated and I hadn't thought about a cabinet scraper so BIG thanks for that, could really help me. The pickguard is like J.C. said, to hide the SC holes and I can remember seeing a similar guitar years ago, (I think it might have belonged to Jason Becker) and thinking it was the coolest thing I had ever seen.

Ah, I see. I'd just have the routes filled in, but I guess it is easier with the pickguard. Pickguards look cool, but it always seemed strange to me to hide a nice maple top like that.

Instead of a black pg, maybe trying a mockup with a flame maple pickguard?
