• Update with Pic! Pickup Mounting Ring replacements ??

I've been thinking about making these rings at work but I wasn't sure how much of a need there is for these. The rings I'm speaking of are the larger ones found on the older Charvels or Jacksons. I started to make one for myself today and I thought maybe someone else could use these. I guess The problem is that I'm not sure it is actually "cost worthy" to do it. I guess if I would get enough requests for them it might be worth it so let me know what you think on this ok? Maybe also let me know what you'd be willing to give for these? They will be the exact same size and all the features of the originals except the pebbly grained finish, that usually wore to a shiny surface after awhile anyway. They will actually be a better ring too because they would be solid and not just a hollow shell. The surface will have a nice "flat black" appearance much like EMG's. I'll get pictures of mine on here when it is done.
Just a thought,
Dave=>
By the way, if this wrong of me to do here, or I put this in the wrong forum, I appologize ahead of time.

Thanks for letting me know but the problem there is the plating costs. You have to get a LOT of those plated at one time for it to be even worth making them. Brass are nice ones to make but tarnish very easily. You can use a good lacquer to clearcoat them but it eventually chips or wears off.
Thanks again,

Are they copies of the stock rings, or do they fit a "normal" humbucker? What are they made out of?

Id say I'd pay $10 give or take a few and I'd want to get 3 to 5 of them. (depending on price)

David, I am trying to contact EMG about the issue... Rick Hunt is the guy there and I asked him about the original drawing of the dimensions of the pickup so that you know what you have to do.

It seems by popular demand you are going to make a few ones for EMGs (standard size) and a few normal oversize replacements like the one that came in the set I sold to you.

If you think about it, it seems you have a market here for custom made rings... you just gotta come up with some cool looking ideas and we will all buy from you....

also, you can program anything in the CNC machine.. is that the way you are going to make them?...

is that + - 0.005 tolerance in mm?... then that's pretty good.. (smart ass engineer here..<-)

Hotrodder : If I get enough requests for that type, I can make those too. What you want is when the pickup is in the ring, it doesn't look lost right? They will be made of Delrin, very solid and it won't crack at the screw holes.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Not quite Rodrigo, I meant plus or minus five thousandths of an inch. I'll be using the standard Bridgeport knee milling machine(it's a labor of love..... ).

This could work out,
Thanks again,

Bridgeport... the Jacksons of of the milling machine world!... beauty!...

did you know that my degree is in chatter vibrations?... interesting stuff... I love CNC and all that... you probably know more than I do though... I am very sloppy machinist..

I have a friend who made a small model JET turbine in his milling machine at home... that's just ridiculous!...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Bingo! I have a SD Distortion in my 4 and not only does it look lost, I have some electrical tape rolled up and stuck in the gap just to keep the pickup parallel to the strings.

Here's a sample of how they will look if this all works out. This is finished now but if the one in the pic is too thick let me know. It's 1/4" high.
Thanks,

That is so sweet that I had to reach for a tissue...

Thickness is ok... Remember, mine needs to be standard just like the ring in the new jacksons... I will give you more detail when Rick finishes eating his sandwich...

Just found an EMG I had. It's an 81 and it has the sticker HIE on the back. I could get the outside dimensions from this model but does anyone know if they've change size at all, if ever?
Thanks,

Hey Dave,
Thats a great idea!!
If you start making them, I'm going to 2 jackson sized ones that can fit an EMG 81. I have the original Jackson mounting rings on the guitar, but the EMG 81 rocks back and forth. So, So i'm basiclly going to need 2 mounting rings that the outsides fit a Jackson guitar, but the insides need to fit an EMG 81.

Mr. Wescott,

I will tell you tonight about the EMG... you can believe my drawings as much as you can believe any engineers' drawings (ouch... something bad will come from this statement, I know it)...
