Brilliantly stated. This is exactly why the paid membership is offered. And this is why the core of the site, its members and their knowledge, have remained free. I'm not holding out my hand asking for money. Knowing this site, if I asked for donations I would have probably made more money. I never have claimed the JCF classifieds were the greatest place to sell a guitar, it is merely an added bonus to those who wanted to pay and upgraded them to include some extra features for every one to enjoy. If you like it, great, if not, sorry. If you want to pay, fine, if not, thats good too, enjoy the place, thats why its here.

Actually Newc, it started out by someone commenting that the Classified had slowed down. Then it turned into a debate as to where the money goes. I don't know where it went from there because apparently the thread had no value (so I'm told anyhow).

I could care less if Jeremy was making tons of money and keeping it all to himself. My only beef is the censorship.

You want to know something funny, the only reason I didn't pony up any $$$ is because I don't want to contribute to or participate in anything like these exclusive features. I've offered to donate a number of times of the years - the $20 is not problem for me.

I imagine the $20 is not an issue for many. I paid because I wanted to post in the classifieds. It paid off for me. I sold something there just the other day. All the bonus features really don't appeal to me at all. For some I could see it as being beneficial. Outside of the classifieds change nothing has really changed.

I posted in the other thread (which having reposted here, will probably make my opinion here 'ignorant' and thus fodder for deleting) that there were other ways to fund a message board without the secrecy and stuff - there are MUCH bigger boards that are able to run on donations without having to give away secret decoder rings, and perks like getting to vote someone off the island or show pics of boobies in a private lounge. Heck, rig-talk has boobie pics for free in a NSFW forum.

What's interesting is that we still haven't heard anything about what happens to the $ - from ToeJam's posts (sorry to single you out Joe, just going from what was stated in the last thread) the admins haven't seen a dime, so it looks like they are doing the heavy lifting and not getting compensated. If this is a commercial board (meaning it's for profit) I would at least hope it would be stated as such somewhere, instead of being seen as a fan site still... and that the people who do most of the work, ie the admins, profit from it too. Not slamming Jeremy, but we never see him for *years* and then he suddenly pops up to take your $ and steer the ship. Heck, for that matter, did the admins have any say in this, or was it a Jeremy decision?

Is it that bad for the membership as a whole to actually know what is going on with the board? If it's not big deal, then just say it - my guess is that the board is obviously a commercial enterprise now, and Jeremy has at least for now, unpaid admins who have about as much knowledge about what's coming up as the rest of us do. Hell, I'd like to find a source of free labor, you admins want to work in my salt mines too?

Bottom line: Jeremy owns the board and can do whatever he wants to do. If you don't like that he deleted a thread that was not really serving a purpose other than to stir up controversy, then please go to a different board.

I do kind of wonder where the money is going though. I understand that hosting costs money and that licensing the forum software costs money, but I thought the dealers supported all of that in exchange for free advertising. What could it hurt to post a quarterly forum budget? We may look at it and see some areas that could be cut, therefore saving Jeremy some cash. At the very least, it would quiet the few discontent members.
