  • Alnico II set in an RR3?

What do you all think? I've had the Duncan Designed pups, DiMarzio FRED/PAFJoe and lately an Invader bridge and neck set.
    Dont like any of them.

Would an Alnico II bridge and neck set sound nice for heavy rock/metal in an RR3? I love Slash's tone (who doesn't?!) but he uses the Alnico II bridge model in both bridge and neck right? Should I do the same?
I'm not trying to get Slash's tone, just a nice rock/metal tone in a guitar that seems to be lacking in character.

Would the 59 set be better in this guitar?

Slash does have a great tone , but a les paul is far different from an RR3. i have never heard alnico 2's in an RR but i cant see them sounding great. Try a 59, i have them in my guitars and they do sound great or another alternative wouldbe to try a duncan custom custom which is a 59 beefed up. i hate chosing pickups because different pickups sound different in different' guitars, but good luck with it man

Yeah this is the thing, it's so hard to tell what'll sound good. I like Seymour Duncans so that narrows it down a wee bit. But do I go 59s, Custom/Jazz, Distortion/Jazz, Custom Custom/Jazz, JB/Jazz, AlnicoIIs, Phat Cats even?
So much choice, but I'm fed up trying pups in this thing already.

MY GOD MAN!!! DON'T DO IT!!!!

If you do it, you'll tear a hole in the space-time... thingy!!!

        Think of someone besides yourself!!!

**this message is completely facetious. The writer really has no opinion one way or the other and the space-time thingy will be just fine.

I have tried a few combinations in my RR3. What I settled on might not do it for you but I love them. I now have EMGs in it (81b 85n). Before them I had in Duncan Performers (Detonators that came stock in it,) then a Duncan Distortion and a Jazz neck, and they sounded good too, but just a little too "raspy" for my taste. I then tried a Dimarzio Super Dist. in the bridge and that was much better to my ears. I would have left it in there and been very happy, but I got the set of EMGs and figured what the heck. I'm glad I did. I mostly play 80's metal so the EMGs are actually suited for it pretty well.

I don't know if this will help you but it might. Good Luck finding your sound!

I'm no Duncan fan, but if I had to choose from their wares to answer your question, I would choose: Alnico-II neck, Custom-5 bridge.

Gibson's "Modern Classic" set (490R/498T) would also fit the bill.

              Rockfield's SWV neck/Mafia bridge.

              Stan Hinesley's Legacy neck/Scorpion bridge.

              Swineshead's Runaway neck/Warthog bridge.
please don't put it into words, 'cause I fear what you're thinking

I already have a Custom 5 in the bridge of my Epi SG, so would prefer something different.

Oh aye, I'd never heard of Swineshead until you said that. They look pretty cool and well priced too. I'll have to look into those.
