Re: neck thru vs set neck vs bolt on guitars

Neck thru for the most part! Although I am wanting a Charvel Bengal Tiger like George Lynch! That's just always been one of my favorites.
For everything else a neck through just feels better.

All I own so far are bolt ons..but am saving up for a RR1..so I may form an opinion after that.

I'll go through periods where I won't even touch the neck-thrus, then reverse gears and leave the bolt-ons alone for a while. I like 'em both and can't imagine not having the choice.

Re: neck thru vs set neck vs bolt on guitars

I don't mind any kind of neck arrangement on a quality guitar but after a few years of gigging with the set necks and neck thrus I began adding bolt-ons to my collection, starting with the SD1 and the rot set in. Now I prefer to gig with the bolt-on guitars, namely my red/blackburst custom and the Bullseye RI. When I get the SD1 setup again she shall return to the stage once more!!!

Not selling any of the others, round here they are harder to find so I'll just hand on to them.

I think neck-thrus are pretty fun to play, but they just don't seem as "alive" to me as a bolt-on. Set-necks don't really appeal to me at all.

Let me put it this way - if I had a signature Jackson, it would be a bolt-on hardtail Kelly. I just like how they sound and feel.

I like em all, but I will agree with the original poster (way back whenever this thread was started), bolt-ons do tend to give a more percussive tone, to my ears at least. (whether that's good or bad depends on what tone you're going for)

I'd say set-necks sound warmer to me, but I think the only set-necks I've played are gibsons and I think the scale length difference there is probably a bigger factor.

I guess that's why Taylor and Martin acoustics sound bad, because of the setneck and its glue!

What a putz!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">How long have you been playing? he reason I ask is that Rik Emmett of Triumph is a lefty, but plays right-handed. He says he feels it's an advantage to have his stronger hand on the fretboard. I guess if you've played for many years it'd be tough to switch.
My sister's friend married a guy who was ambidextous. He could play left or right hand, on a right hand guitar! He'd flip the same guitar back and forth and play just as well each way.

Anyway, make a favorite search at Ebay and you'll get an email when that lefty
comes it. I'd just say lefty Charvel, lefty Jackson or similar.

10-4 on Taylors.
They are bolt on.

I guess I'll have to rely on Martin, Guild, Alvarez, Ramirez.etc... for my point then.

Anyway, Ed probably doesn't counterfeit Les Pauls because Gibson would take his head off. Therefore their design sucks.
His posts are all about saying that his
stuff's the best, screw the rest. He's building a 24-fret Rhoads neckthru now, so I hope FMIC puts the hammer on his ass. I bet he'll logo some as Jacksons and try to palm them off as Custom Shop
models to his customers.

Yup, most modern (Taylor, Bourgeois, etc) high end acoustics have bolt on necks. The screws are on the interior of the body going through the neck block.

I like the way a painted neck looks but I love the feel of an oiled neck. I'm leaning more towards bolt ons these days because of the feel. As far as the sustain myth I believe it is just that, a myth.
