  • A question on the finned inlays

does anyone else know why on the TBX series only, the inlays are reversed in relation to the tuners, and as many pictures I could find, all the other guitars and basses have them the normal way ( NOT customs jobs ) meaning, the fat part of the triangle is on the tuner side of the headstock, but on these models they are reversed. Even the normal reversed head units have the fat part on the tuners side...any reasoning behind this?

Not only on the TBX series. It is a little uncommon, but some models have reverse inlays. It's just a cosmetic thing.

t.y. Sunbane, cosmetic- absolutely, it does not increase value or anything but just VERY curious as to why they did it instead of the normal way, and what other models did they reverse the triangles, cause I can't find any, if you know, please point me to a picture or model I can look em up and see. ( remember the TBX was a production run, not custom )

      thanks.

Well, the Charvel 750XL had reverse fins...I personally own one. The Jackson DX10D does I think? Then a few discontinued models come to mind; the RR3R, KE3R and KS2 for example, and a couple of euro specials; KE-X and DR-X.

thank you sunbane the only one I could see was your 750, the RR3R shown below +KE3R+KS2 still have the fat part of the fins on the tuner side:

I always wondered about it may have something to do with Jackson (PRO)-Japan guitar stuff only from back in the day -- Your 750XL is a Japan model, so maybe I'm on the right track?

          here's my reverse finned TBX:

IMO, that's the correct way the inlays should be.

Hmm...well, I guess that reverse sharfins + reverse head is cheaper to make, since it equals regular sharkfins + regular head on a left hand model. They can just grab a neck for another model off the rack and slap it on. A regular headstock + reverse sharkfins would require a little more work, I'd imagine.

.... it is different and thats a bonus. Like I said value/rarity--who cares, just glad to see a couple models NOT following in the "norm"

                thanks for all the help

The Soloist Archtop Pro also has reverse fins with normal headstock, which is no surprise as that model is basically the counterpart to the Charvel 750XL.
When I bought my Soloist Archtop Pro that little fact helped me identify the model. It was a shitty ebay auction labeled as "Jackson guitar" with only a little blurry pic... but the reverse fins with normal headstock gave it away.

Not bad but they'd look much better if they were sideways

Weren't they reversed on that "lost" Rhoads model as well? That goes way back to the beginning so whose to say what direction is normal.

Sigh, you just don't get it, do you?

Those would just be regular dots made out of a different material. Reverse dots, on the other hand, are mind blowing.
