  • Who's left handed on here?

Just wondering, cause it seems there's way more than I thought. When I first joined I was taking mental notes, but I seem to be losing track.
Maybe you all can reply and post your gear if you don't mind?

I guess I'll start this off. My name is Joe, I'm 29, been playing for about 11 years. Here's the gear that I currently own.

    I'll chime in next.

I remember there being about 5 other active lefties on the board but I've lost touch with them. I've been so swamped lately that I've not been hanging here on the JCF as much.

As for gear, I've got about 20+ lefty guitars. My main gigging equipment is a such:
    1988 Jackson S/S/S string-thru
    1984 Charvel H/H
    2005 SL1
    AMP: JSX w/ Marshall 2x12 cab (1936)
    TC Gmajor/ Korg d2000 tuner /X2 wireless/ FCB1010 midiController

I'm predominantly a lefty. I shovel and hold an axe left handed, write left and hold my spoon in the left, but oddly enough, hold the knife and fork as a right hander does!?!??!?!??

However, When I grab a baseball bat or hockey stick, it's the right handed way.

I played around with a buddy's violin and I bowed with the left and fingerboarded with the right??!?!?!??!?

On any other stringed instrument that sits on my lap or is strapped on my shoulder? I'm a righty.

              I'm totally a self taught player that can't read a music note if my life depended on it. I've got fantastic ears! When I first grabbed a guitar, I wasn't quite sure what to do with it. First song I learned was "Evil Ways, by Santana. Not the chords. Just the root notes A and B. I played it with the guitar on my lap as the late, great Jeff Healy did. Right handed, I might add. {I didn't know any better, but I did see lotsa' players on TV and such playing conventionally.}

Right from that moment, I switched to the conventional way of playing. Learned "Sunshine of Your Love, Whole Lotta' Love and Spoonful" not long after. I was on my way as a righty guitar playing left hander!

Sometimes I wonder if I picked up an axe left handed, if I'd be the shredder I always wanted to be instead of the Eric Clapton slowhand player that I am now!

My gear? Too much for me to list I'm afraid. The family's ever growing and I'm going to have to update with porn at some point soon.
I know how much you guys desire porn!!!
              Cheers.
              G.

Yeah pictures would be sweet. So far everyone is either a natural right hander who plays lefty, or a lefty who plays right handed!
                Thats so weird!

My younger brother Jacob is naturally right handed, but plays left handed, probably from watching me when he was younger.
I'm the only true lefty in my family. The only thing I do right handed is cut with scissors, sharpen a pencil, and grab gears in my Mustang.

My father(49) is a natural lefty, who was made right handed by his parents. I guess back when he was growing up that was common to do?

If I could do it all over again, I'd learn right handed, only because of all the kick ass guitars available for you guys. It really does suck being a lefty. When we do find a guitar it is usually a low end piece of shit, or an expensive custom, and almost always Black!

And what's real shitty is most companies only have to flip their templates upside down to cut a lefty body. Simple as that. And there's a whole lot more lefties than they think out there.
There's way more on here than I ever would have thought.
                Thanks for posting guys!!!
Hope the rest see this thread also.

                P.S. We need more pictures!!

I'm left handed but play right handed. I started with a left hander as a beginner, but changed to right handed six months later when I realised that if you visited someone's house and they had a guitar sat in the corner, it was going to be a right handed one. Doesn't matter what the occasion is, if I'm visiting and there's a guitar there, I'm going to pick it up. I've been to a funeral wake and...well you know...played Children Of The Grave...

lefty but i play right handed

mechanically, when your a beginner its equally as hard to learn a 'handed' instrument regardless of your handedness or the orientation of the instrument. There's no real reson for a lefty to buy a lefty guitar at rediculous mark ups when they are learning, it wont be easier to learn.

I am left handed also. when i first started playing i committed a sin and tried to play right handed. my first guitar was a used westone, i stopped a few weeks later. and a year or two later i got my first lefty a piece of crap series 10 black, floyd rose copy tremolo, 1hum,2singlecoils black. then in early 1990 i ordered my first great guitar lefty 1990 charvel model 475 metallic black guitar. hated the piece of crap pickups and electronics so i switched them for dimarzios. i have a list of 3000+ want list of guitars/basses and other instruments i want.
                        heres my current gear list.
1.)charvel 1990 metallic black 475 dimarzio super 3(bridge)dimarzio fast track 2 (neck and middle) midboost turned into second tone. each tone only hooked up to the two fast track 2's. changing the cracked schaller floyd and locking nut for and original floyd rose tremolo, with brass or titanium sustain blocks, other parts.

2.)jackson trans red dk2 duncan designed pickups. but will replace with duncan jb (bridge) customshop what i would call texas blues rails(modded hot rails to sound like texas specials),either them or dimarzio heavy blues 2 (neck and middle) and dimarzio evo (bridge). also replace tremolo and locking nut with an upgraded original floyd rose tremolo.

3.) epiphone les pau cherry sunburst-factory pickups, will replace with duncan 59(neck) duncan pearly gates(bridge)
                        4) epiphone tony iommi sg perfect the way it is. Maybe custom order a real gibson version white with floyd rose later down the line.
5/6.) two ibanez sr506 6 string basses. probably switch bass bridges with kahler bass bridges.

                        skb 12 space rack with
                        monster pro 3500 power conditioner
                        line 6 podxt pro
ada mp1 original preamp (before they added classic to the name)
                        fender 2x12 ultimate chorus amp
                        kord dtr 2000 tuner
griblin modded dunlop wah pedal ( will kill anybody who trys to take it from me )
few things im adding in near future
rocktron prophesy 2 preamp with all access pedal
                        peavey jsx full stack
hopefully a kings v grey with the black chinese dragon graphic with floyd rose.
a couple dean fbd's and couple dean razorback explosion, few schecters.
and a couple pc1s from southpaw guitars if they still have them by then.

I, too, am a lefty for writing, playing pool and eating, but do almost everything else --bat, kick, throw, punch and play guitar -- as a righty. It's interesting that so many others on the board have the same inclinations. I find I can use either hand pretty well for tools, which comes in handy.

A question (and you guys might not even be able to answer it either, since no one seems to have "converted" from lefty to righty): Why the hell are "righty" guitars "righty" anyway? Always seemed to me that the dominant hand would do a better job fretting than the picking hand. We all know as guitar players that the right hand does a hell of alot of work, but let's face it- When you're trying to add a few bpm above your current "top speed" it's the fretting hand that needs to be pushed.

The one neat thing- And I remember this, pre-& post being a guitar player- I am much more apt to use my left hand for things because I've played guitar.
