  • Jacksons' previous owners

Just wondering who all has owned the Jackson company throughout the years? Could someone list them all and what years that ownership took place?
Kind of like a timeline or something similar. I used to know some of the owners, but it's been a while and my memory eludes me at the moment.

Didn't 'AMIC' own Jackson at one point?

    Thanks alot guys!

Gank, that was perfect man! Don't know why I didn't think of Wiki for the info. I guess I'll just chalk that up to laziness.

The Wiki articles suck big time. They don't even mention the Akai era, the one people like to push on Fender. Grover bought the Charvel name and shop back in '78 or right about there. That went on for away, until in 1986 they entered a partnership/merged with IMC. But they were still JCMI as far as I know. 1996 they got bought out by Akai (AMIC) and run into th e ground, which may more or less have been on the horizon anyway as Charvel had all but tanked and Jacksons superstrats had fallen off the face of MTV. THAT was where the damage was done and people started leaving, the quality went to crap on the imports, and it seems the Custom Shop slowly started slipping, hittign rock bottom around the Fender buyout. Fender bought them in 2002 and has since brought the quality of the imports up, among other things. That is an abridged history...

CharvelRocker, thanks for the corrections. I thought that the Wiki summary was a little brief, but I wasn't really sure. How does Wiki get their info? Is the info or updates submitted by members? Maybe someone should correct the Jackson/Charvel if it isn't 100%.

I didn't realize that J/C were suffering so badly before the FMIC buyout. I knew that things were slipping but I didn't know the extent of it.
I'm not a Fender guy and I never have been, but I gotta say that I have noticed dramatic improvements in quality since they've aquired J/C.

There's still alot that needs addressed like the Custom Shop issues, web updates, availabilty, and lastly advertisement. I hope that in time these thing will be addressed and corrected.
But for now I'm just glad that J/C are still around for us all to enjoy.

It's funny that you say that because I hear people say all the time that the quality has slipped SINCE Fender took over. I am not an expert and dont have a wide cross section of pre/post Fender Jacksons to make any educated statement, but my guess is that its all a load of shit. I know the Custom Shops fucks up oders big time now, but I just read that they fucked up a Custom Shop guitar for Dave Mustaine back in Megadeths prime. Talk about a bone head move.

Anyone and everyone can edit a Wiki. Just look at the top of the article for the link that says "edit". It's fun to watch the political biographies change around election time.

Editing a WIKI is fine and dandy, but when you interject personal opinions, i.e. "the imports from xx-era sucked, Fender is doing better/worse than xx", then you dilute it and it becomes a battle of opinions.

I've owned imports from almost all the model years, and cannot say that I've noticed a distinct difference in the quality of any of them, not including the obvious and easily-replaceable stuff like hardware/electronics or the inconsequential stuff like cosmetic appointments (inlays, board wood, binding, etc).

Yes, I've had a "crappy" JS model - didn't see anything wrong with it - same goes for the Performer series that everyone bags on.

Even the Concept series wasn't total crap as has been suggested.

The 1990-94 Professional models were the best imports, but I do wish they had never been produced because all imports since then are judged by those standards, regardless of the fact that they almost killed Jackson. The blind cannot see that, and clamor for a return to those days, even though it would mean Jackson USA would become extinct.

I have to agree with Newc here. I also have several Jacksons ranging from early San Dimas right up tp the latest Fender era and I can't say that the quality is any better or worse for any particular era. I have favorites in my collection for each era but must say they were all awesome quality wise!

You know what kills me is the prices on these new charvel stratheads and jacksons! WOW, they are expensive either way. Right now can't touch one unless you got $2600.00 or more. The history on these jems are long and hard to track... who owned what and when.

the ones pushing the "slipping quality" barrow the hardest are usually trying to sell their older Jacksons and use "Pre-Fender" to try to create some kind of mystique or exclusivity about their instrument. You need to buy their special old instrument instead of those crappy new ones because we all know, "they don't make 'em like they used to".
