  • OLD ( small ) Charvel logo differences???

ok gang, here's another question for the WHOLE group, not just the bassplayers:

I have a bunch of B series charvels with the old (small ) logo.

    OK
my latest one I just got out of the bunch that says TM, not R...

I assume TM came before R, as TM is trademark, and obviously R means "registered" TM.

my question is, when did charvel REGISTER the trademark, to change it to R and not TM to help me identify the year???

as a help, my 86,87,88 B series charvels ALL say R, and this new one I got must be a 85 that has the TM on it.

    anyone know???

    thanks

There's a bunch on this in the Charvel Import forum - I remember some posts about when the neck plates had what on them - try a search in that forum.

thanks GrandT, I will do that and see what I can find.

I just thought someone would know off the top of their head what year they changed the logo from TM to R..

Here's the original import dating guide thread:

It's geared more toward the guitars than the basses, but I'm pretty sure the same guidelines apply. From what Brian posted there, it looks like the TM was used into '87, and the R was more common in '88. From reading quite a few threads about this stuff, my feeling is that there are a lot of exceptions to the "rules", and the TM to R change probably happened in the middle of a production year, plus they probably had some of each on hand at some point and didn't keep them in order. By the way, there were no import Charvels before '86.

thanks also to you DG, ya I forgot 86-89 only, and it really makes no difference except for curiosity, my 3B serial on the neck is c6, and I always assumed it was the first digit for stamped serials, and 3rd digit for plate serials..oh well, a lot more to find out before I jump to any conclusions.

the catalog pics on the B series basses for the different years help a lot, as on the things, the switch position changed thru the couple years, and thats what I'm dating my stuff on. ( inside/outside the knobs )

for example my 3B has the switch on the outside, and corresponds to the catalog 1986, my 3B with the switch on the inside corresponds to the catalog 1987...etc, and my 4B they only made in 88.

well... whether TM or R, they all use the same bunch of parts, and who knows perhaps they ran out of TM stickers and used R stickers at that point in time and whatever ft worth plates were next in line to be used......
