What do they finish Jackson Guitars with?

There is no way it's nitrocellulose. As "tone-preserving" as it may be, it looks like crap on factory-assembled guitars and it makes the neck sticky as hell.

All my jacksons have had a rich, beautiful, durable finish, so I am thinking polyurethane, or at best, some sort of synthetic laquer. Does anybody know what they have been finishing these guitars with over the years?

As Diablo said, Polyurethane. Tried seeing what those foam stands would do to several guitars. Nada. It's poly mate!

Polyester for graphics (so the gloss doesn't obscure them) and polyurethane for non-graphics?

I don't think Nitro is used much anymore, the regulation and disposal related to it is more of a burden, then Poly. I could be wrong, but I remember talking to a guy about having a guitar redone, and somehow the conversation got into the Nitro issues. Could some of the painters here comment on that.

Jackson uses poly Gibson still uses Nitro.
Nitro is fine IMO if you want the finish to age and crack over time.
Poly is very durable.

Back in 1998 when I spoke with Tim Wilson about my custom shop order he told me Jackson uses PPG paint. My custom shop Rhoads was a special color not available from anyone but BASF at the time and only in Lacquer touch up paint bottles. So I sent the touch up paint to Tim Wilson and they did my Rhoads in Lacquer. So there may be others out there painted in some other paint than poly but for the most part its PPG Poly

My 2000 Rhoads V has an Awesome finish with the Lightning Sky but my 2008 DKMG Dinky with the Transparent red finish has already got a chip in it and I dont even know how it got there so I'm thinking they are toatally different finishes on these. The V being a USA and the Dinky being the Japan model..............:think:
