My luthier keeps telling me that Floyds are being phased out. Has anyone heard of this?

Perhaps your luthier isn't very good with
Floyds and would LIKE to see them phased out; I have run into a few vintage zealots who are anti-Floyd just because
'62 Strats didn't have them, so would refuse to install or set them up. I guess if you're so busy you can pick and choose customers....

Hell, Kahler's even making trems again!
That'd tell me that trems are becoming MORE popular, and the Floyd is the most
successful trem ever.

Hey, when the Chapman Stick came out, everyone said 6-strings were obsolete, but it's 30 years later and they're still
the dominant form of guitar.

What's all this "my luthier" stuff? You have a guy that builds your guitars? Luthiers build guitars, the geeks at GC and the guy that owns the local shop is not a luthier (unless he actually builds them).

He loves Floyds too. And he does a great job on the setup. But he keeps telling me to stock up on parts and stuff when I find them. I thought it was odd that he says that stuff about OFR. Maybe he thinks they are trying to push the speedloader setup?

He does my refrets, and today he replaced a shark inlay that was cracked. He has never built me a guitar, but has built several which I thought were kick. I'll keep using the word luthier to describe him. Or maybe just Paul.

Re: Floyd Rose

And even if Floyd Rose trems were stopped in production, enough of the guitar manufacturers have hundreds on stock that it would take a few years until they became rare. But there's so many of them out there, and so many more waiting to be installed on guitars that the current stock would keep us happy for quite some time...

hey, the guy that used to help me out with tech stuff at sam ash is a roberto-venn grad. so there are luthiers that work for these kinda places. gotta work somewhere, eh?

as far as the phasing out thing goes, it may be speedloader related, as someone previously mentioned.

Re: Floyd Rose

Newc is right though. Too many repairmen like to call themselves "luthiers" when they are far from being one. Fact is even many people who work in guitar factories are not even luthiers. I can and have built guitars in the past (from scratch, no pre shaped or manufactured stuff) but I don't consider myself a luthier.

Back to the topic: I doubt Floyds will go anywhere for the simple reason that so many guitars out there have them that need parts and sometimes even complete replacement that there will always be a market for atleast the parts.
