  • Jackson Pickup Information

I have a Jackson J-85 pickup. I've been looking for some information on this pickup, but I haven't had much luck. Do you guys know anything on it? I have a original Charvel Model 4, I was curious about swapping out the J-50BC with the J-85. Does anyone know how the J-85 might compare to the J-50BC? The ohm impedance on the J-85 is 14.80 if that helps any. I have also included a picture, which doesn't tell much. Thanks in advanced!!

Can anyone give me the ohm impedance for a J50-BC? The J85 PU seems to be a mystery.. I have found info on the J80, J90, and J95.. but I haven't found anything on the J85. Would appreciate the help.

I think the j85 came in the fusions. Is it a blade pickup?

I had the same pickup in a USA Jackson Dinky. It was a Made in USA pickup and labeled the same way except the round sticker was blue and J-85 was written in pen. It was a killer sounding pickup. I also couldn't get any info on it as well. I would totally recommend replacing the J-50 with it. The J-50 is more of a PAF flavor, only around 8.5k.

            Jackson Pickup Information

1993 Jackson/Charvel catalog just claims "J-85 is a high output voltage with a nice fat midrange grind". Very technical and detailed

Here's a link to J50BC specs from the 1986 Charvel Imports catalog.

The DC range for the J-85 sounds similar to a Duncan Custom, and this description sounds like the description for a Custom:

                General guidelines..

                J50's - paf class
                J80's - distortion class
J90's - high output dist class
                750xl, 88LE, AT1, Roswell Pro, SG-X, 4 others...
Stilletto Duece 1/2 Stack, MkIII Mini-Stack, J-Station, 12 spaces of misc rack stuff, Sonar 4, Event 20/20, misc outboard stuff...

Why do I still want MORE?

                  Thanks for the reply guys..

How do you think the J85 will fare with the 6db boost?

Hey, do you know what does "XL" mean at the bottom of a pickup?
I'm buying a J-100 pickup that has "XL" written on bottom.
Is this the same as J-100 without "XL".
Worth buying? Also, what should i pay for it?

The XL has extra windings and a slightly higher output with more focus on the high treble than those without. A J-100XL is similar to a "Hot Strat" tone. Still single coil style, but more sustain and increased output.
                      "Got a crazy feeling I don't understand,
                      Gotta get away from here.
Feelin' like I shoulda kept my feet on the ground
Waitin' for the sun to appear..."

That sounds fairly good. After all, i'm putting it in to my new Adrian Smith Custom strat (built it myself). Should fit well.
I haven't got the pictures the seller promised, but hopefully soon :P
                        Thank you for the answer
