I used to think that as well. I have an EMG81 / EMG-S in a Fusion Pro at 18v, it's ok. I have an EMG81b / EMG85n in a Kelly Start with an SPC boost. It's ok.
But I got a RR24M with a single EMG81 and this thing SMOKES! Great tone. So yes, it does depend on the axe and yes, my 3 EMG81s all sound different, although they are each wired different. I'm going to change the 18v axe back to 9v to compare head-to-head against the RR24M.
After hearing the RR24M, I'm more tempted to try EMGs in other axes. I wasn't before getting this axe.
Has anyone tried putting a passive humbucker in their RR24? Did it sound any better? And if so, did you fill the battery box hole?
I go through phases where I dislike, like then love active EMG pickups. I initially replaced the pickup in my RR24 with a Seymour Duncan JB TB-4 and really liked the tone, at first. After a while I realized there was not as much note definition in the really high frequencies (4th order harmonics above the 15th fret). I ran through a few other passive pickups (Seymour Duncan Distortion SH-6, Seymour Duncan Full Shred TB10, Seymour Duncan Jazz SH2, Jackson USA J-95 High Output Wideband, Jackson USA J-90C Ultra-High Output Ceramic, Gibson 500T, Gibson 498T) before I put the EMG 81 back in. With the 18 volt mod the EMG 81 sounds the best for the sound I want and the definition of individual notes I am looking for. I can honestly say the passives "sounded better" for rhythm work / chording than the 9v EMG 81. With the 18v EMG 81 it's a matter of opinion. Right now I am back to my EMG "like" stage.

I had the EMG 81/85 combo in my previous Soloist. That is perfect for an aggressive, yet articulate, sound I'm after. Although the higher single notes can be a bit piercing. Now I have a new Soloist CS with the Duncan Distortion SH-6 in the bridge. It has similar output, but way more "chunk" than the 81 (more bass) with a little less clarity and smoother higher single notes. All from what I experience of course. I'm still tweaking my Triaxis for it (reducing bass, adjusting presence etc.) to avoid a muddy sound and so far I like it a lot. Tight chunky riffs and smooth leads. So yeah, try the SH-6!
In the end, this is all personal preference. I don't have experience with Dimarzio. Anyone have experience with the new EMG81-X?

EMGs rock! Though, you need to put the 85 in the bridge and the 81 or 60 in the neck.
Personally, I think the 85 in the bridge vs the 81 is a preference (how do you like your treble to sound, etc). I agree though that the 60 in the neck is my personal choice for most guitars (a few I like the 85 in the neck and in one I run 81 / 81). The nice thing about EMG pickups is with the quick connect wiring, you solder one in place then all you have to do to try new combinations is pull off the strings and swap one for another (that's how I found my favorite combos per guitar, I run all positions through my 60, 81, 85, 81-X, 58 and 60A...sometimes I even try out a few EMG HZs because I do like their sound in some guitars...but the 81/60 is most versatile in my opinion, 81/85, 81/81 and 81/81 are also good but more specific applications).
So given what you're saying, I'm not gonna get any umpfh out of the 85 by putting it in the bridge. I'll think I'll just wait til I get my third USA Jackson and put the EMG's in that. I'm really happy with my SH-6.
You'll get more "umpfh" out of the 85 in the bridge... it's warmer sounding and has more balls than the 81 since it's got an alnico 5 magnet instead of the ceramic like the 81.

I know the op went for jackson J pickups but im suprised the custom 5 SH/TB-14 didnt get a mention not as hot as some other pickups but way nicer than the JB...IMO and not as picky with the guitar/players...
I also found it's not the treble thats harsh on the JB it's the high mid frequencies that seem to border on the harsh/piercing...
