  • Does this indicate a fake?

Okay, I bought a Soloist SL2H in a pawn shop about a year ago and started a thread on here with some pics. Well, I finally decided to inventory all of my gear for insurance purposes and guess what I discovered?

The serial on a USA normally looks something like this:

    U 1 2 3 4 5

This one's serial, which I had never really paid attention to before, looks more like this:

    U 1 2 3 4 5

That is, the numbers are closer together on the left.

EDIT: Grrrr.... It took out my spaces. Anyway, my other two USA's have the serial spread all the way across the fretboard. This one goes about halfway across.

Otherwise, it says Made in Usa on the headstock, it's neck-through, genuine Duncan pup's, and original Floyd. When I bought it, the guy said that a couple of local Guitar Center guys had stopped by and said that it's a fake. I told him that if it were a fake, then someone spent more to fake it than a real one would have cost.

If it has indeed been faked, the only thing I can think of that they would have started with is a Japanese-made SL4 from a few years ago, since it's neck-through and two humbickers.

Anyone have any insights on this? Even if it is indeed a fake, I still like it better than the Fusion I traded for it, but I would like to know.

Well, an SL2H has 24 frets with ebony board and binding. An SL4 only had 22 frets, rosewood board and no binding.

Does it have neck binding and sharkfin inlays?
Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable
Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get

They are hand stamped, so variations in spacing may be due to the amount of tequilla consumed the evening before.
Bon Jovi is like a frozen Coca Cola.. It's cool, it's crunchy, but when all is said and done it is still pop....

Is that right? The SL4 only has 22 frets?

Edit - of course its right - wow - never realised that. SL3 has 24?

Edit Edit - yup, 24 on the SL3. That's friggin' bizzare. And kind of wimpy overall - Is there any reason to buy an SL3 or SL4 over a Pro or a Model 6? Less and less than I thought. Anyway, I don't really like neckthroughs.

Edit Edit Edit - ignore this whole post. I'm only 1/2 cup of coffee into my morning.

Thanks, guys. Yeah, it's 24 frets with abalone inlays and logo. Also, I never knew about the SL4 being just 22 frets.

            I feel better now!

Abalone or MoP? I could see someone putting USA on a painted logo headstock but nobody is going to put abalone on an import just to fool someone for what, an extra $700 tops on resale value?

Pics would help but I think you have a real USA.

The spacing on many of my serial stamps is different, spread/either side/or even in groups of two. Stevieb may be on to something with the night before theory

I highly doubt this is a faked instrument.

The amount of effort to produce a neckthru instrument is considerable.

Those U stamps are hand-stamped so there will be variations.

The easiest way for us to tell is clear color photographs of the guitar,
the top of the fretboard and the headstock.
