• Tired of people wastin my time............

I put an ad out advertising myself as a guitarist looking to join a COVER band and go ahead and list my influences, etc.

Well this guy calls me up wanting a guitar player for his original band, and says he called me cause he liked the bands I listed.

So I figure that since nothing has come my way in a long time, I'll give this a try, but only after asking this guy if we can do a handful of covers.

I specifically sent this idiot a list of about 6 songs that I really want to play. I had to narrow it way down cause including me it would only be a 3 Piece.

I told him if they couldn't do this stuff, no problem and I would understand, but that I wouldn't be interested. Well he calls me back and says no problem.

After I waste 2 days going over there and learnig their sorry tunes (they were pretty bad) and inspite of the fact that the singer\bassplayer was pretty bad at both, I thought well at least I will get out and play somewhere.

So I ask the guy at the second practice, Did you learn any of the tunes I sent? He tells me , I don't think we'll be doing any of that stuff cause I'm a classic type guy and I don't like any of this new rock, plus I won't sing it well cause I don't like it.

Now yea , I'm crying a bit here , but do you guys ever have people just purposly waste your time like this?

Musicians can be alot like women, they think if they get you to "join" they can change your likes and dislikes. You still have to give a little, but if you hate what your playing, you might as well play country and make good money.

Same sh*t happened to me. A neighboor of mine told me "hey man, I really like the stuff you play and I want you to play with a band I'm playing", and since I had recently quit the band I was playing with I said why not give it a try. After 5 days of calls between me and the band's singer they gave me a list of songs to play. After I learned all the phucking songs they tell me that their guitarist is going to stay in the band and they do not need me anymore. This sucks, but I didn't really dig the bands style anyway so it basically was back to normal.Rick, Where do you live BTW?

Rick, be glad you only wasted 2 days. Try being in a band for months and months only to find out one of the other members really wants to be in a Death Metal band, or a blues band, or whatever, or spend months learning covers only to find out nobody in the band can write music to save thier life. Been there, done that, got the T-Shirt.

Why would you neglect playing in a band because they didn't want to play cover tunes? WOW. Things really have changed back when I was playing
if people wanted to play cover tunes we laughed at them.

Well Mortis...

It's either make 600.00 -800.00 and play cover tunes, or make 200.00 play you own stuff and then maybe never get to play the bar again.

PLUS! Their original stuff sucked real bad. They wanted me to play the previous guitar players, leads ,chords and everything, and a lot of it was out of key to begin with.

Anyway the point is, the add said cover band and this idiot basically lied to me.

Yeah that's what I hate - people that can't read or that think your specific ad is open to negotiation. I went through that a coupla times - looking for bassist (not guitar-bassist - guitarist who switched to bassist, as they always wanna play guitar parts on the bass) must know such-and-such songs/styles (from Classic Rock to Metallica) and they show up playing Country bass, or they have the cool gear ($1600 Punisher bass and refrigerator-sized amp and they know ONE song). Frikkin idiots, man.
I had a chance to join another band after Autumn Frost broke up (yet again) called Flatline - they were based a coupla counties over from me but not really a bad drive. They had regular paying gigs in Nashville and the college towns and they played stuff like Godsmack, Alice In Chains, etc etc - no grunt/screech or punk stuff. The drummer sent me a tape of covers to learn and most of em I kinda knew already ('cept the G-smack), but EVERY frikkin time I would load my POS Daytona (1985) and get ready to go, the POS would have SOME sort of problem and it'd take the rest of the day to find it and fix it, and I'd feel like a total puss-out calling or emailing the guy and apologizing - finally I said 'look, obviously Fate has its hand against me joining this band, so I won't waste your time anymore - Good Luck'. That sh1t p1ssed me off, man. That car would never fail to crank when I had to go to frikkin WORK but if I wanted to go do something for ME it developed a problem.
Man was I glad to get rid of that POS last year - bought a 2002 Impala (Impaler ) - but no band offers since then

Bottom line is, you need to be into what you are playing. Covers, originals, whatever. When you are enjoying what your playing,(giv'in you are talented), it will sound great. There's nothing worse than playing music that you do not like! Originals or covers. It really doesn't matter. Think about it. Cover tunes are somebody else's originals. Your originals can someday become somebody else's covers.

Re: Tired of people wastin my time............

The lengths we go to in the search for a band are ridiculous. I had played in several garage bands from the time I was about 15 until around 22, and none ever did anything except waste time, doing nothing more than half-assed practice (if you could call it that when the full band was never present) or sitting around talking about "making it" while pounding down beers. I was getting really discouraged, but when I saw an ad for a band needing a lead guitarist, I responded. I put together a demo tape of my original stuff, so the guy could get an idea of what I could and couldn't do. He plays the tape, digs my playing, and offers me the position.

It all should have been obvious that things were not what they seemed at this point. After a shaky performance at Milwaukee Metalfest, the frontman (guitars/vocals) was replacing the lead guitarist (the spot I was taking) and the drummer. He supposedly had a new drummer lined up. They were scheduled to play at the LA Metalfest in a couple of months, and had an album recorded and awaiting mastering, so he made me a tape of the songs I needed to learn. The songs really weren't doing it for me, but I practiced them and jammed with the guy, with the understanding that this was his material and he wanted it played his way. His playing was OK, but some of the guitar parts just weren't meshing together very well. We came to an agreement, that I would improve upon some of the leads where I could.

I had put an amp on layaway, to take out to LA, and was dutifully practicing, but it started to seem strange that I hadn't met the rest of the band. A couple of weeks go by, and I call the guy. This is when he tells me that he had falling-out with the small label he was on, that the Metalfest gig was off, and that he was scrapping the band. The drummer he had lined up was playing in other bands anyway, and although the label was going to release the CD as planned, there would be no gigging to support it.

Ironically, the band did reappear, and actually are doing quite a few shows locally again, but their sound and image is a complete change in course from my brief participation. I guess I should be glad that it didn't work out.
