  • My New Bass

Occasionally, I like to mess around on the bass. I've wanted a Ric since I first saw Chris Squire, then McCartney, then Geddy Lee. Got a killer deal on this new 4003 Model. It has the push-pull tone pot cap mod, now built in by the factory. Pull it out to get the old 4001 bass tone, push it it and get a nice rounded full frequency tone with lots of bottom. I got several other basses, but a Ric is a Ric!
I started out with Midnight Blue, which I liked, but there were some flaws with the guitar (unusual for a Ric in my experience), so I returned it and got a Fireglow instead. I'm glad I did, since the finish is just brilliant. It's also one of those finishes that is difficult to photograph. The action is low and that snarl and growl sound is awesome and typically a Rickenbacker. I'm sticking with the Ric strings. They seem to work fine. They are a odd gauge and if you go to another brand, like Rotosound, nut work would be required. All in all in just rips.

    Here's the Midnight Blue.

I love Rick basses. My brother used to have one in a tobacco burst style finish. It sounded devastating just playing acoustically with crazy sustain. I think he pawned or sold it to pay off a debt and then bought a Larrivee bass down the road to replace it, but it was a toy compared to the big R.

Yeah, they are unique. Just a real distinct tone. Ric actually has improved the designs over the years. I really like the dual truss rods and the new cap mod. With the tone pot pushed in (See pic with red arrow) the tone is just earth shaking. A real plus. Folks have been doing this mod on older 4003 and 4001 models for years. Now Ric offers it from the factory through a push-pull. So, you can have both worlds now. The necks have been beefed up as well. This one was made in Jan. 2009. As of April 2009, they went to a 2 piece maple neck and made the neck somewhat thinner so I'm told. I like the full "C" shape that this one has. I have yet to play one post April since they are scarce. Ric has been in behind in orders for quite sometime.

They are bright, but the whole tonal spectrum kicks in. Plenty of bottom with the tone push-pull knob pushed in. If you play one, you'll end up taking it home

Look for and old live performance of Highway Star. I think the bassist for Deep Purple was playing one of those.

I think your right. Roger Glover was a big Rickenbacker bass fan.
