  • Lets talk about those 7 string twangers.

I'm pretty interested in going to the 7 string route. I figure that the Strat thing has been beaten to death by the fans of Yngwie, Eddie, Richie, Clapton, etc.. So I'm thinking about heading towards a 7 string.

I'm slightly skeptical, but I'm not too sure why. I love bands like Nevermore and stuff and I guess an extra string wouldn't hurt.. It seems like Schecter pretty much dominates the 7 string market in terms of price.

Anything out there with a maple fretboard that's not the JL signature model and that's not a million dollars?

Wow, the guitars look absolutely stunning. The prices are perfect, too. Anyone have any experience with these?

      http://www.rondomusic.com/intercepto...eflameemg.html I wish that didn't have a floyd.

Searching here will find a bunch of threads with Agiles. There are plenty of threads on ss.org about both their 7s & 8s, but there's a dedicated forum that you should look at:

        http://www.agileguitarforum.com/

Basically, some of the guitars have QC problems, but they an excellent attitude to customer care, so that shouldn't put you off. Here's a snap of my 8 string intrepid:

I just got my first seven. They're a ton of fun. I definitely recommend getting one. I have an Ibanez Apex 2 I got for about the price of a 7321. Mahogany, DiMarzios and string through. It sounds great. It has rosewood though.

I've got three sevens now. A Schecter BJ (older one that doesn't have the ghey card inlay), a Schecter Loomis hardtail, and an Ibanez RG1527. Out of the three, the Ibenhad is the best IMO. I upgraded the pickups, but the fit/finish/fretwork was excellent right out of the box. I did have some tuning issues with it initially, so I used teflon tape on the bridge studs to secure them (they wiggle way too much stock), and replaced the crap nut on it with a Schaller 7 string Floyd nut. The trem is much more solid now and it holds its tuning nicely. The thin neck makes the transition from six strings alot easier. I upgraded the pickups to Dimarzio Blazes. I'm not sure I'd pay what they are asking for them new now, but I paid $900 a few years ago and I think that was pretty fair. To make a long story short, I have no problems recommending either a used 1527 or 7620 that is in nice condition. They are out there...

As for the Schecters, they were a great bang for the buck, but I had to do ALOT of setup work on them to get them playing well. Both had awful fretwork and needed the nut slots filed down. I had to level and crown the Loomis THREE times to get it playing well... every time I got the guitar stung up and adjusted a new fret would come up out of level. Weird. I'm no Dan Earlwine, but I have some experience and both the Schecters were tempremental to say the least. After a ton of work, they are now in great playing shape. The baritone scale takes some getting used to, but its not too bad. I usually string them with 10 - 46 and a 56 or 59 for the low B depending on whats available. I'm not a huge fan of the EMG's in the Loomis though... Maybe I'll throw some passives in there. Out of the two Schecters, the Loomis is a much nicer guitar for sure and people love the way it looks. Every time I use it live someone comments on it.

Ah thank you for the input. Truth be told every single Ibanez i've ever played has lacked majorly in one department. The tone department. I cannot warm up to the sterile and thin tone of Ibanezes, but that's just my opinion. I'm also a nut about tuning stability, which is why I'm over floyd's. I sort of have a peeve with signature models, the JL model is badass but me being a super fan boy + having a signature guitar of his...Well..That wouldn't really be unique IMO.

Those Agile guitars look great but I always like to play something before I buy it. The Carvin store in Hollywood is about 20 minutes from my house so I'll definitely have to check it out sometime soon.

Too bad there isn't a 7 string strat..

Fender did at least one custom shop 7-string strat a couple years back. It was on DCGL's site, and it was really cool!

I owned an Ibanez RG7620 and a Schecter 007 Elite, and both were nice, but I just got sick of them after awhile. I've got the 7-string itch again and really want to order a Carvin eventually.
