I posted this past summer about my "journey to the dark side", detailing my new Prophet 08 analog synth.
I have been pulled farther yet into the world of keyboards with my latest purchase: a Nord Electro 3.
The Nord Electro 3 specializes in emulating vintage organ sounds, mainly the Hammond B3, The Vox Continental, and the Farfisa. It even has virtual drawbars to let you sculpt your sound, just like the analog drawbars of the originals.
It also has various piano models, and a sample library that lets you make it sound like any instrument you load in. Nord has a library of samples on their web site for download, and many different piano models as well. Software is provided to let you edit or create your own samples.
One of the samples is that of the old Clavinet D6 (think Stevie Wonder's "Superstition"), which is just a blast to play with.
This is a very straight forward keyboard; no sequencers, arpeggiators, or "cheater" functions. It's easy to select your sound so you can just start playing. It does have on board effects like wah, chorus, phaser, flange, reverb, and an amp emulator with gain adjust, so you can get some really raunchy sounding distorted sounds out of it.
I never realized how many recordings use Hammond or other organs on them. I thought my Prophet synth would satisfy most of my keyboard needs, but later realized I needed something with vintage organ and piano capabilities for some of the songs I wanted to play.
The real kicker is I just sold my black SLATQH to fund part of this. Please don't ostracize me...
Here's a few pics. The Nord is the red one on the bottom:
