  • Broken headstock les paul purchase???

so i am really wanting a les paul. and i see one on CL with a broken headstock. its bad but not thru n thru. near the scarf joint? does gibson use scarf joints? okay near the heel and through the truss rod cavity on one side. its a les paul studio (gibson) like $800 new? im confident i can salvage it into a fine player. its a clean break. would over tension like running .12's cause this kind of break?

anyways...i offered him $75 bucks. i figure it comes w a nice gibson molded case. i can at least recover that and the hardware if it dont work out...
he probably thinks its worth more. is it? if you cant play it and dont want to fix it, i say its nearly worth-less!

another thought? what do you s'pose it would resell for provided it was a good repair job - barely noticeable...
...I will secretly play a Les Paul when nobody is looking...

Gibson's don't use scarf joints. When you say near the heel, do you mean the heel by the body, or the back of the neck? I just got a broken neck joint Studio a few weeks ago. Do a search on this sub-board. If the repair is done right, the repair will be stronger than the surrounding wood, per se so heavy strings won't be an issue. $75 bucks is a super low ball if it's a Gibson, but you never know. If it's a true Gibby, you will definitely get your money back if all parts are stock.

    Post a pic - I love projects!!!

oh ok sorry. maybe i mis-spoke...its cracked near the headstock - i guess where the scarf joint would be if it had one. he or she didnt post a price. im hoping for a realistic counter offer...

i'll go steal the CL pics n try to put it up...

A non faded studio is around $1200 new, but what you're negotiating will depend on year, trim level, overall condition. A broken headstock Studio can be had as low $100 to as high as $500+. It all depends. Best of luck and I hope you get a great deal!!!
