This arrived yesterday and I have to say, it's probably the most instantly impressive guitar I've had in a long time. Everything came right on this one, and it plays like butter and sounds awesome.
I have a koa Charvel SD1 which I've always really liked both in terms of tone and appearance. But for this, the main inspiration was really Reb Beach's Suhr guitars. I always really liked the look of those, but they have some features (and a price) that I wasn't too keen on. So that basically means Pau Ferro neck, Koa body, EMGs and a gold Floyd.
I've never played a Pau Ferro neck before but it feels awesome. Lee at GMW has a 'process' for oiled Pau Ferro necks, plus I guess it's very tight grained as there's basically no drag when you move around the neck. This guitar is really loud acoustically, and has more of a 'snap' than I expected from a koa guitar. I guess again because of the 'tightness' of the neck. The string tension on this guitar is absolutely perfect for me - maybe I'm a pussy, but I don't like to have to work too hard, and this thing is just great for me. I really don't understand why guitars with the same scale length and broadly identical specs should have such different string tension, but they do. The vagueries of wood I guess....
Anyway, here's some more pics. It's actually kinda tough to capture the colour of the body properly, but these are fairly representative:
