At least my '90 RG570's neck has a thin lacquer coat. However it's worn over time and has become a very comfortable finish, almost like raw wood.

Wizard II isn't all that bad. It comes down to personal taste. The two most notable differences other than neck profile would be the electronics (The 550s are much better) and the trem system. I have owned the 550 as well as a current Ibby with the Edge III. the Edge III gets a bad rap, mostly from people who don't even know what they are talking about. I abused my edge III and it stayed in tune, wonderfully. However, the original Edge trem has more mass to it, and makes for a smoother reacting trem. Warbles were a piece of cake with the original Edge. No so with the Edge III. Lower priced guitars of today are WAY better than those of the previous decades, hence a better bang for the buck.
        I'm not Ron!
