  • Burst my first Cherry!!!

I have painted quite a few guitars over the years, but this was my first stab at a cherry burst finish. It is an Ernie Ball Clone from the "you know who" era. It has an awesome 3/8" Spalted maple top with a nice flame to boot. The main body is one piece mahogany. Also, didn't want to waste any of the spalted maple so a piece was added to the headstock to match the body. I also have to thank a couple of guys on the JCF that helped with what techniques to use to accomplish the burst. And there was a question a couple of months ago about painting Polyurethane over Lacquer - It is possible. This guitar has a polyester sanding sealer, with tinted color lacquer for the burst, followed by clear coats of polyurethane.

Looks awesome! Did you wind up using the stewmac colors for the burst?

      Hey Sully,
Yeah...I used the color tone tints and dropped them straight into the clear lacquer until I got the color I wanted. I tell you for the amount of tint I used, those 2 ounce bottles will last for years. To spray the guitar, I used 6 drops of vintage amber and 8 drops of cherry. I was pretty amazed.

Oh wow! I figured you'd need more than that. Good to know!

              Thanks Mike and Sully,
You were the JCF guys I was referring to. Really appreciated the tip on shooting the tinted lacquer to keep the paint build up thin.

Looks great--better than a lot of high-end custom stuff pro luthiers sell.

What kind of tape is that?

Regular old blue masking tape from Home Depot. I close off the holes to prevent any blow through from side to side.

Great looking guitar! Unfortunately, Ed's lawyers has patented the name "you know who", so you'll be contacted by them for copyright infringement! I think he also owns any stripes in spalted maple.
