  • Strat with maple fretboard question.

    Yo dudes!

I'm gonna buy a fender stratocaster american deluxe soon but i don't know which one to choose; one with a maple fretboard or one with a rosewood fretboard.

I know that the rosewood has more mids and that the maple has more highs and is obviously then brighter.

But what advantages/losses will it have getting a maple fretboard instead of a rosewood and the other way around?

How is it with the EQ on the amp? Is it impossible to get a maple sound from a rosewood neck by turning up the high and lowering bass and mid?

I have a Strat with a maple neck. I can't hear a difference in sound (as long as they have the same pickups. I have heard people say they can, but I certainly can't.

I think maple looks far sexier on a Strat and when it starts to wear, it looks even cooler. Other than that, the maple took a little getting use to because of the laquer or whatever it is they put on the neck.

Depends on what the body looks like. I like maple for the most part, but rosewood sometimes looks good with a sunburst or white.

As far as tone, I don't know if it has that big of an impact.

Oh and why an American Deluxe? I don't know much about strats for having 3 MIM's, but the MIM's seem like a great deal for the money.

my 60th has a maple, and it's a tobacco burst.

2006+ MIM's are very very close to the USA's except for the pickups. And personally I like the light satin finish on the MIM's better. As far as maple vs. rosewood, I just like the maple for looks. My ear isn't good enough to know the difference in sound anyway.

                And it's WRONG!!!

If you go into GC and look at the $20K+ Strats from the 60s, the rosewood and sunburst is a common combo.

My GC has a beautiful sunburst MIM Strat with wonderful maple neck, but I'm not into paying $499 (less haggle) for a MIM Strat. The 2008 I picked up used at GC was $237.

What the fuck are you talking about?

The first strats were 2 color sunburst with maple neck.

There is a hell of a difference between a MIM Strat and the American Deluxe.

I'd go with Rosewood, personally. I don't like the way Fender does Maple boards, with the thick glossy finish built up around the skinny little frets. I always hated maple boards until I tried a Pro Mod Charvel.

But, you may like one. Try them both out and see what you think.

That's only on the nitro or "vintage style" finishes where they spray over the frets. On the Am Std and the Dlx and others, the finish is that thin satin on the fretboard that's not gloopy around the frets.

The Sam Ash by me has several of last-year's American Deluxe leftovers for pretty cheap ($1099) and one is the maple V-neck, I tried it out because it was kind of a bargain. I still don't like them. :dunno:

Oh, the American Special Strat (ASS, ) does have the thin finish like a Charvel, it was actually pretty decent.

What I really want is one of this year's (with the compound radius) in Olympic Pearl/Rosewood.

i really dislike the american special stratocasters, but i don't know why.
i have tried a couple of different types one with HSS config one with maple and one with rosewood fingerboard but i like the american standard so much more.

and since i'm used to shred guitars like jackson and ibanez i think it would be better for me getting a neck without the compound radius and just 16" or whatever it is all the way through

Jacksons are compound radius 12 - 16" and Strats are typically a 9.5" straight radius. So, your statement makes no sense, really. :dunno:
