I have a dvd on guitar setup and the guy goes through great detail on setting up a vtrem for better tuning stability. The heart of his setup technique is only 2 of the six screws holding the trem to the body are actually tightened to contact the baseplate at all, the other ones just serve as locating pins.

Youtube has some excerpts from the DVD available...

      A Floyd is 2 & 3/32"... Vintage Strat is 2 & 7/32" spacing & mounting.

      These are 2 & 1/16" spacing with 2 & 7/32" mount.

So, it's about 1/32" narrower than a Floyd, which is about 1/8" narrower than a vintage tremolo.

The point is the MIM/Highway One/ASS (I LOVE calling it that)/American Standard (these are all 2 & 1/16") spacing is quite a bit narrower than the old-school Fenders.

What I like about that Highway One/ASS bridge is you can use a 6-screw vintage body and have the 6-screw "vintage" look but the narrower modern spacing that, at least for me, works much better, I don't pull strings off the edges of the neck like I do on a vintage-space Fender.

Dude...I swear to God...I didn't see any other posts last night...perhaps those couple Guinness's I had were screwing up my ability to browse a site properly.
I do appreciate the fact that you move the posts and don't scream like a big pussy...like admins on other sites. I mean..after all...all I did was post in the wrong forum...it aint like I butt raped a nun.

As for the trem...I was referring, specifically, to Yngwie's comments....so thanks uli, for bringing that up. Yngwie and numerous other high profile players claim to be able to keep these things in tune even after divebombing the shit out of them. I get that the tuning problems with vintage trems are the reason Floyds were invented...but if there are folks out there who claim to have a way around this, I certainly want to figure it out.

I use nut sauce on all my guitars...it hasn't fixed the problem on the non-locking trems. Some guy on youtube had a video where he basically hammered the trem, and tuned....went to the next string, did the same...all the way down. Once complete, any time the guitar went out of tune, he just hammered the trem, and all the strings went back in tune. Not sure if this makes sense....but it worked for him. Funny how these things never work for me.

Anyway...I appreciate the tuning advice...perhaps some things will work for me....

Charvel750...sorry if I offended you by posting a pic of a Fender in the incorrect forum....I didn't see any other posts there...maybe i didn't refresh my page properly..maybe I wasn't paying attention. I didn't realize it was that much of a problem..but rest assured, the site admins are on the ball here...they took care of me right away...wow
