Nice grab. I also have a 1981 Silverburst. Those Gibson Vees from the late 70's/early 80's have the nicest necks with ridiculously low action. Why Gibson doesn't reissue that 1-3/8" thick body style and round headstock is beyond me. Some of the best Vees Gibson ever made.
That's cool as hell. The only gripe I have about those is that the pick guard is huge and covers up almost the entire front of the guitar. Kinda makes the finish almost superfluous.

Yeah...But, I believe it is a manufacturing/cost issue. Gibson can lay the body down on the table and cut all of the routes in one set-up - as opposed to routing pickups on the top and then having to flip the body and re-align to ensure the top and back routes are correct. Very minor issues for small volume, but big paybacks for the enormous companies.
