  • NGD: Music Man John Petrucci Mystic Dream

I was planning getting another guitar. Who's not? And I was about to pull the trigger on a Charvel... So guys, don't throw rocks at me, I know, I've been drifting away from Jackson guitars the last year...

So I came across an interesting "used" deal. It's a MusicMan JP6 Mystic Dream color. The guitar was 1 year old, was played only at home and in very good condition. I got it at half the price of a brand new one and this was fitting my budget. I wished it had the piezo but it doesn't, anyway, to be worth using "live" I would have needed 2 amps so the option would have been cool only at home.

Hard to take decent pics of that changing color finish. It goes from green to purple with some dark red, even black, in between.

Neck is thin, not finished on the back. Whammy is smooth. Ergonomics of this guitar are awesome, very comfortable to play. This guitar was the easiest one to setup of my whole collection. Fit and finish is incredible. I have 2 top of the line Godin guitars but this one is a notch above regarding built quality. I don't know if it's me but you can feel it when you are playing it.

    And some pics here: https://picasaweb.google.com/jbaubry...ohnPetrucciJP6

I'm rehearsing with it this coming Thursday so I'll be able to play it loud. I could only tried it a very low volume at home but both PUs seem good. I really dig the LiquiFire in the neck, not sure yet about the CrunchLab but it may wake up when high volume output.

We have a gig coming on Saturday and I'm tempted to use it as my main axe.

It's funny, it's my first "expensive" guitar and when I started playing it last evening, I was feeling like I was not worthy of owning such a guitar. Anyway, makes me want to woodshed and bring my chops to a new level!

Congrats. I'm really diggin' the Liquifire in the neck position of one of my basswood Charvels. Nice lead tone and rhythm sound. It works!

Very nice and half price is a no-brainier.
All the MM I've played have been top notch in build quality and feel.
IMO, this is the Musicman to own since it's the only one with a radius flatter than 12" at 15".
Currently at 78 guitars - Paul Reed Smith, Jackson, Robin, Washburn, Carvin, Peavey, U.S. Masters, G&L, Hamer, Godin, BC Rich, Yamaha, Fender, ESP, Kramer, Cort, Ibanez, Aria Pro & Charvel

Funny you say that but, I wanted to love the Axis model. I really dig single cutaway guitars and tought an Axis would be an awesome complementary guitar to my 2 Godin signature as both are single cut with a fixed bridge. But I never was able to bond with the neck. I don't know if it's my small hands or what, but the neck on the Axis felt weird for my style of playing.

Except the JP and Axis, I haven't played other MM guitars so I can not comment but I really dig the JP.

Congrats. These are nice guitars! BTW, you don't need two amps to use the piezo setting although ideally it would be better. I used to use mine with two amps, one being a California Blonde Acoustic amp. But I have also simply used the piezo with a regular amp on a clean channel and that works. The two amp set up is great for the blend setting of piezo through the acoustic amp and a clean through the regular amp's clean channel simultaneously
Even without the piezo you got a nice guitar and its in the best finish, Mystic Dream!

I didn't know. Anyway, as said, caught that guitar in the local ads. It did not have piezo on it. But we never know what I could get later in the future!

                very nice!
I've never played the 6 string version but the JP7's are really nice.
If this is our perdition, will you walk with me?

It's like the 7 with one string less... (joking)

Thanks everyone for the comments, I'm very happy with it and can't wait to get some more time to play it!

Love the guitar. I've owned a LTD 2007 Blue Dawn. I had to get rid of it because of the neck. A tip for you my friend: Be very carefull with the temprature in the room you keep it in. I loved the guitar when it was set up, but it reacted to the weather like mad. The neck twisted into shapes I can't put names on. But when all was well, almost nothing cam close to feel of that guitar...

I've seen one of those Blue Dawn and that was a very nice color.

Thanks for the advice for the neck vs temparature.
