  • Need a guitar for a 10 year old.

OK, so my nephew really wants to start playing guitar and being a little more serious about it. I need do find out about some information about guitars that are roughly 3/4 size, if it exists. What are the better quality ones out there?

    Thanks peeps,

    -Nate

It's hard to find scaled down electrics, but tons of 3/4 size acoustics.

A friend of mine who is rather short of stature got one of these. He's been very happy with it.

I just picked up a Washburn N1 for my 10 year old Godson. Fits him very well.

I would go full size, personally. They'll grow into it very quickly and the micro stuff is generally junk.

The biggest problem you get into with the 3/4 sized guitars is intonation. They just won't intonate and the main reason is because the strings aren't also scaled down to 3/4 size. Honestly, I think you would do better with a 7/8 size "student" model. Barring that, you could at least get a Gibson clone with the 24.75-inch scale.

One of those mini-Strats oughta do it.

But yeah, I'd go full-size (or Jackson Dinky). Thomas McRocklin did pretty well on a full-sized JEM.

Axl makes a 3/4 scale and 1/2 scale strat style guitar. Quality is ok, nothing great, but ok for a youngster just starting out. I bought one for my 6 year old son last year and he plays around on it. For a 10 year old, I might consider a full size guitar.

Here's the link to the Axl site with the guitar that I picked up for my son.

                            +1

Few Years will let you know how serious he is and by then he will be 13,14 with a 3/4 guitar... well that's lame... plus if he gives up then you are stuck with a 3/4 guitar...

Guys, thanks for the response. I ended up dragging him away from his parents and letting him sit with my guitars. I also am going to take on the task of teaching him and getting him on his feet with it too. When I asked him what kind of music he liked, it said 80's rock. When I asked him what kind of guitar he wanted, he wanted one like the ones I have, the pointy headstock ones. Well played kid... well played.
