I'd go with a full-sizer. I had a 3/4 when I started, and it sucked. Yeah, I was 13 and my parents bought me a 3/4 sized guitar.:think:
Anyway, I'd look into the Squier "Affinity" series. I needed a bass to just mess around with, so my wife bought me one of those "gig packs" for Xmas this past year. Just make sure to do a once-over prior to purchase, just to make sure it's in good shape and you didn't get a lemon.
Honestly, I'm very happy with my Affinity. After a minor setup and some work with the string action, it plays very nicely, especially for a value-priced instrument. It's a good enough instrument that even after you've been playing for a little bit of time, you won't find yourself feeling like your guitar is a piece of crap...
