  • NGD Again

By again, I mean Ive owned this one before, but its such a nice guitar, it deserves a more in depth NGD than last time.

1991 Axtra Custom (got the date from the HB cavity)

I took the bridge and strings off to clean it, its awaiting strings at the moment.

I know the top is maple, but is this mahogany?? This guitar weighs a ton, so Im assuming it is.

    Now thats a maple cap.

The headstock isnt that elongated or as straight as the pic makes it look. I took it at a weird angle to get the color of the HS. The HS has a 3/16 ish flame maple veneer on it to match the body.

The fret board is ebony with no inlays (obviously). It has a Kahler Spyder trem, and an original EMG 81 w/o the 3 pin quick connect, though I think it may be a candidate for a passive swap. The neck pup is a Bartolini, its weak, another reason for maybe a pup swap.

This guitar was owned by Shaun Glass formerly of SOiL. It was given to the other guitarist in my band by his Aunt who was Shauns ex-girlfriend. Her name is in the thanks list in the liner booklet to Scars. He knows we have it and doesnt care. Hes still friends somewhat with our bass player, though no longer related. Our other guitarist just never really liked it, but Ive been a fan of SOiL since I was 17 AND I liked the guitar for the guitar as well, so now its mine, again, and for good this time.

Nice. Jeff Loomis was endorsed by Axtra in the early Nevermore days.

Well, got new strings put on yesterday, and after a little action adjustment, the 81 sounds just fine. The Bartolini on the other hand, is gonna get swapped for an SA at some point i guess, as it still isnt right. I have a theory why, but Im just going to swap it at some point instead of mucking around with it.

Performed the 18v mod on the Axtra. Freeking sweet!! The articulation is amazing, and theres some extra low end punch. I can play a classic G chord and hear every note on the lead channel.

Not that I wholly trust Wikipedia, but theres no mention of Shaun Glass in the article for Broken Hope.

He used them during Death's Human album, and I think a bit before that album too. He still insisted on using his Stealth in the music video for Lack of Comprehension, however.

Also this is a REEEEEEALLY nice Axtra, I'd love to see more pics.
