As near as I can tell Kirk denies its existence today, and pretends his "hamstercaster" was an ESP the whole time.
Which will be kinda difficult since he's pictured on the cover of the Garage days EP with the fernades logo front and centre!!

BTW that was very impressive amount of Metallica nerdiness there, my cap is doffed sir!

                +1 but too late now.

                Pete,

Can you give some details on what you are doing? What prep and paints being used?

Sure Don - When I got the guitar, the original owner already had white lacquer on the body. The neck was and still is unfinished. I took the finish that he had and sanded it back down smooth wht 220 wet/dry paper. When I got the majority of the nicks and dings out, I resprayed a coat of white lacquer. I used the Rustoleum lacquer products for color and I use Minwax clear lacquer. I used to buy clear by the gallon, but it's hard to get inexpensively now. I used Rustoleum metallic blue for the whole body. I was orignally going to do a faux binding, but the edges are too round on the guitar. After the color coat, I hit it with 3 coats of clear. When that dried (overnight), I wet sanded with 220 to get rid of the orange peel and did 3 more coats. I will wet sand again and hit it with 3 more coats and then let it dry. Rustoleum dries very quickly and you can probably final sand and polish in a week, but I like to wait the 30 days to be sure. I didn't like the way the metallic color came out, but I will keep it until I decide on another color in the future. I have 3 more paint projects to do...

Cool. I have the How to Paint Your Guitar...ebook and he says he uses Krylon. You paint so much that I guess you must have tried Krylon in the past and found better stuff with what you are using now?

I'm getting the urge to spice up some axes with graphics, so at first I'll just be adding on top of an existing finish.

Yup - I tried it and I didn't like it too much. If I do any solid colors that I can't mix myself, Rustoleum works well. Plus Minwax is cheaper than Reranch and Stew-Mac, as well as being easily purchased locally.

I painted a Vantage V several years ago with that Krylon book. Let it sit in a storage shed for about 4 years, then decided to put it together. I glued the nut on and some of the glue ran down the back of the neck. I wiped it off and paint came with it.

Fuck dude and his Krylon book

Spraymax 2k is the best can clear you can get IMO shit dries like concrete and lays out smooth. I use auto guns and have sprayed cars and guitars with them..but for a quick and pretty damn good looking job ya cant beat the spraymax stuff..kinda pricey though

Done for now - sanded and polished. Will let it dry a week, then goes the nut, hardware and pickups...
