  • Hey Sully, what's in your paint booth today?

I've decided to try to get over my dislike of painting by painting a bunch of guitars. Wish me luck on that.

I built a paint booth a few months back and have been giving it a fair amount of use lately. Here's what I did today:

First up is a Raven made from Spanish Cedar

Next is a Swamp Ash strat style (with some changes) in a color similar to Mopar's Plum Crazy

...finally, this is a Raven bolt on prototype body. The back of the cutaway and neck heel are pretty sculpted out. This one will end up with the city of Chicago's flag painted on it. Looking forward to finishing it, as it'll be a nice guitar for when ol' Sully gets homesick.

    All together now!

The glamourous life of guitar building. Time for a beer!

    Thanks for checking it out!

Yep! The red stars will go up the raised center, while the blue stripes will be along side of it.

You have got to post pics of that when it is done. That flag will line up awesomely with that body!

That spanish cedar looks kick ass too.

I dig the purple it looks good. That Spanish cedar looks really nice too. Let us know how it works out as a tonewood for electric when you get it together.

Spanish Cedar is kickass for electrics; similar to mahogany, but a bit snappier.

Beautiful grain too. Is the oil toxic like western cedar?

You definitely want to be masked up when sanding and cutting this stuff. The trade off is that the guitar smells like a hope chest during most of the process!

Nice burst on that one Sully. I've seen many badly done bursts, but that one is perfect.
