  • HNLPW! (Happy New Les Pauls Week!)

Big week! I have some great guitars in my Charvel WDM's, but something was missing...

I REALLY missed my Les Pauls.

I dug around on Craigslist a bit, and started small - I found a Berny LP Custom. Kinda beat, but had good electronics (SD 59's w/upgraded pots & tuners), and the price was right! I dressed it up a little bit (thanks Ben!), and got a cool Sykes model.

After that, I realized that nothing I could do was going to make me like my Shiva, so Todd Duane and I did a little trading, and I wound up with his Les Paul Robot. I was really apprehensive about this one after reading the reviews, but after having Todd demo it out, it was (and is!) cool as hell!

I spent last week out in Detroit, and had asked a guy about a white "Limited Edition" Les Paul he had listed on Craigslist. We went back & forth on it a bit, and when I got back, I drove about 30 miles (one way) to go check it out. FAKE...total FAKE!! Not sure if he knew it or not, but when you judge a book by it's cover, I'd say I was being set up to get scammed. Luckily, it wasn't my first rodeo, and when you have a mis-shapen headstock, screened serial number, poorly screened "Les Paul" sig, off-color decal, and a painted face on the peghead, it's best to walk away. Or...drive 30 miles back home.

Of course, that had me thinking LP all day yesterday and this morning. I had a couple guitars not getting much play - my Snakeskin Charvel WDM, and one of my Ibanez K7's. Drove around and played LOTS of guitars...and one caught my eye and ear! I walked out of GC with a Les Paul Traditional Pro - in a GOLD TOP!! I've always wanted one... And since I was upside down in the trade (in my favor), I snagged a nice LP Studio.

Big week, like I said! I have another trade in the works, and will be adding one more LP to the family. Here's the pics (poorly taken on a cell phone)...

I took me 4 years just to get 5 guitars. You bought 4 guitars in a day? That's beyond serious GAS!
    Fuck ebay, fuck paypal

The best part - $299 out of my pocket! If you have the right trades, it makes ALL the difference!

The Studio is actually more of a dark brown - it does look a bit more red in the pic than it is. Had it been the red color, I probably wouldn't have bought it. I always totally dug the Les Paul Studio Lite that Jerry Cantrell used in the "Would?" video, and this one is pretty close.

Yeah I meant the gold top, all of them I've seen have the red back/sides. Yours looks dark tho hard to tell. Either way its pretty sexy lol. But on the studio I think they do call that worn cherry or fades cherry or something. How much better do you like the gold tops neck compared to the studio?

Yeah, the Gold Top has a bit of a reddish back to it. It's a satin finish too - not wild about that, but hey...it's the back.

The Studio is called "Faded Brown Mahogany".

The Gold Top has the asymmetrical neck profile. It's pretty cool, and feels good right off the bat. The Studio's neck feels a bit more burly, and since it is a 50's profile, that makes sense. I guess I don't have a big preference on the 50's vs. 60's neck - I don't mind a chunky LP neck, since that's what I expect it to be. I'm not a "speedy" player anyway.

            Fun stuff.

I will say one thing - the Burny can hold it's own against the others. Cool guitars if you come across one, but I would bet they're much like Epi's (and Gibsons for that matter) - you have to play a few to find a good one.

Wow! That is a big week for new guitars. And I thought I was lucky when I had 2 guitars arrive on the same day earlier this summer. Congrats!

Love the Sykes tribute Burny and the goldtop, although the zebras aren't doing it for me in there for some reason.

Sorry to hear that, again. Maybe it's time to order a GMW anaconda to take its place in your WD group.

                          Or another Les Paul...

Likely to move the Bomber too. Keeping the Swords & Skull, as they are the icons!

Gotta love that goldtop Chris. Beautiful. You are the man when it comes to guitars and amps. You need to start your own Youtube channel. The heck with ToneKing!!
I regret selling my early 80's Alpine White Les Paul Custom. Should have kept that one. I am starting to get into LP's more too. My bandmate plays an early 80's LP in Silverburst. He bought it new and it has been his number 1 and only guitar for all that time. Its loaded with a set of EMG's. It has these cool factory tuners that have little cranks pop out of the tuner knobs. That guitar rips and we use it in the studio for almost all the rhythm tracks on everything we record. Whats up with the rogue knob on the Studio?? Some custom electronics in there?

That's not a Studio model. It's the Robot model.

Nice ones, Chris! Love the Goldtop!
