  • Charvel Custom Shop Explorer Clone Project Is Done...

Some here may appreciate this one...

I wanted a Charvel Custom Shop EXplorer, but they don't make 'em anymore so I build my own. Warmoth body and neck. I was going to paint it myself, but I was having trouble with the paint cracking, so I sent it to Marty Bell to finish.

The headstock I did myself. Grain filler, then primer and white paint. I then had a full vinyl headstock decal made with the logo and applied that. 10 coats of Spray Max 2K clear over that and then wet sanding with 600, 800, 1200, 1500 and 2000 grit. Finally, rubbing compound and swirl remover to bring back the gloss/shine... You would never be able to tell that it is a decal and I didn't actually paint it...

Came out cool - got it playing and sounding great! Just need to intonate the Floyd and put on the D-Tuna and it'll be ready to rock...

Very cool! How is the overall balance of the guitar?

Seems pretty good - pretty much like what you'd expect from an Explorer shape... Guitar body is pretty heavy...

That came out great. I'm surprised you didn't let Marty deal with the decal, as he does a great job on those. He really nailed that zebra. The only thing I don't like is that truss cover...REPLACE IT...REPLACE IT NOW!

So what is the trick to doing that decal, anyway? I'm guessing you make both a black and white decal, then cut alternating pieces out to match the pattern on the headstock? Yours came out great.

Why would it matter when it's a Warmoth body and neck? It's kinda lame to have a Charvel neck plate and logo on it.

I think it's kinda lame to even make that comment. It is a replica of a guitar Charvel will no longer make. I wanted it to look authentic. I'm not trying to fool anyone. It is just my personal guitar, it isn't like I'm trying to sell it.
